The two young suspects arrested Tuesday in Winterthur (Zurich Canton)

The two young suspects arrested Tuesday in Winterthur (Canton Zurich) on the margins of the attack in Vienna Monday evening have been under criminal investigations since 2018 and 2019 for acts linked to terrorism. The city of Zurich has been shaken for several years by cases of Islamic radicalization.

Criminal proceedings pertaining to the two suspects are still on-going at the federal level, indicated the public minister of the Confederation (Switzerland) Wednesday to Keystone-ATS. The 24-year-old man is the principal accused in one of two proceedings. His 18-year-old friend is also under investigation as part of a proceeding in the juvenile court. Both of them are Swiss citizens.

The two young men are acquaintances of the terrorist who was killed by police Monday evening in Vienna after having killed four persons and wounded 22 on the streets. The investigation connected to the attack should establish which connections exactly the terrorist maintained with the two Swiss.

There has been talk in recent years of several Islamists in Winterthur. The imam of the An'Nur Mosque, now closed, was convicted and deported to Somalia for having called for the deaths of non-practicing Muslims. Other convicted (persons) had ties to the same mosque. One man was sentenced in September to 4 years in prison for having recruited jihadist travelers.
