University of North Dakota Siouxper Insanity Goes on

Hat tip Campus Reform

"Expel this."

An island of insanity in a sea of sanity. That's the only way you can describe the University of North Dakota, where they are tying themselves in knots over the former UND mascot (a Sioux Indian). Now they want to expel students who wore a "siouxper-drunk" t-shirt to an off-campus drinking party.

North Dakota is a state with something like 3% unemployment. The place is booming because they are drilling for oil on non-government land.  But you always have your university campuses, where common sense has zero currency.

Of course, UC Irvine, where I teach, has the anteater for its mascot. I mean how can you offend anybody with an anteater joke?

Question: What has four legs and eats ants?

Answer: An anteater?

Wrong. Two uncles. (ants aunts)

Get a life!!

I thing the university is on MUCH better ground here than it was changing the mascot in the first place. Reasonable minds may differ about choosing mascots... is it honoring a historical figure or group, or is it patronizing? The "siouxper drunk" t-shirt is discreditable in much more decisive ways.

Who complains about teams being called Trojans or Spartans, or the council of fraternities and sororities being called "Pan-Hellenic"? On the other hand, how would it sound to name teams "The Pittsburgh Negroes" and the "Kansas City Caucasians"?

Of course one difference is there are no identifiable Trojans to file a complaint.
