Belgium: Anti-Semitism and Union Thugs

It looks like Belgium also has union bullies. I thought we were the only country with that problem. Of course, Belgium also has its share of anti-Semitism. That's why a union leader is threatening to "take action" against Jewish schools because of Israeli settlements. The below article is from the Coordination Forum for Countering Anti-Semitism. In this matter, trade union chief Hugo Deckers writes to a Jewish publication (Joods Actueel) threatening to "take action" against Jewish schools in retaliation for the Israeli announcement of more settlements.

Here is a follow-up apology of sorts  from Deckers to Joods Actueel (in Flemish):

Below is a rough translation of Deckers' letter followed by a rough trans;lation of Joods Actueel's response.

Hugo Deckers"

"I want to offer my sincere apology if I have unintentionally hurt your feelings. I underestimated the results my words have had. I see my error in the hope that I can be of service to you by this message.

With friendly greetings,

Hugo Deckers."

Joods Actueel's response:

"Geachte heer Deckers,

"We have received your report but fear that you see the entire situation in error. This matter is not about our feelings. We have only our opinions about the Middle East situation, but you are holding Belgian Jews responsible for a situation over which we have no control over the events. You excuse yourself over our hurt feelings, but we don't need your apology.

You must recognize that your parallel is completely in error, that your vague threat against a Jewish school is frankly scandalous and is a misuse of your position with OCED, and you have set a poor example as an important functionary. You hold Jews responsible and bring the Middle East conflict to Belgium.

In your letter, you neglect these errors.

We are not looking for apologies or retractions. Israel can withstand criticism as any democracy must. We ask you to consider the consequences of your words."

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

This incident underlines how the Middle East conflict is stoking anti-Jewish feeling in the West. In Europe, the Jewish communities are being punished  for the conflict no matter what their personal feelings are vis-a-vis Israel. It is shameful.

Sound criticism -- and one Gary Fouse might want to take into consideration with regard to his smear of union families thousands of miles away from Belgium, who he apparently considers responsible for some union leader's comment in Belgium. Was this guy Catholic? If so, should we take that as the explanation for why he is anti-Semitic, and blame all Catholics everywhere?

In Europe, there have traditionally been communist-led unions, socialist-led unions (not the same thing, unless your name is Miggie), Catholic trade unions, and conservative non-Catholic non-socialist non-communist trade unions, each with their own confederation.

Which one is this guy anyway?

What is unique to America is the professional union-busting firm. Nobody else in the world has sunk to that level of abomination.

P.S. Sorry to throw so many inconvenient and highly relevant facts into the discussion when you are trying to keep things simple.

Speaking of unions though, how about them Ohio voters?

Ohio should have seen what public sector unions have done to Calif.

They weren't legislating for California, they were legislating for Ohio. Apparently they see a valid role for what public sector unions have done in Ohio. You should move to the midwest, where unions have a beneficial impact.

The biggest problem with unions in California is the correctional officers' union, which has gone far beyond negotiating decent wages and settling grievances. They actually push legislation to incarcerate far more people than necesary, en masse, which is going far beyond what taxpayers can afford. A smart legal system would sort out those who need to be locked up -- as a matter of public safety, those who need tight supervision, but can support themselves and pay for their treatment, and those who just need to know that they can and will be caught, so cut it out. All three types exist. West Virginia had a very productive initiative for controlling costs by sorting them all out. You should try it out there. You're spending more on prisons than on the universities.
