Belgium: Anti-Semitism and Union Thugs

It looks like Belgium also has union bullies. I thought we were the only country with that problem. Of course, Belgium also has its share of anti-Semitism. That's why a union leader is threatening to "take action" against Jewish schools because of Israeli settlements. The below article is from the Coordination Forum for Countering Anti-Semitism. In this matter, trade union chief Hugo Deckers writes to a Jewish publication (Joods Actueel) threatening to "take action" against Jewish schools in retaliation for the Israeli announcement of more settlements.

"Geachte heer Deckers,



Wij hebben uw bericht goed ontvangen maar vrezen dat u de situatie helemaal verkeerd inschat.


Deze zaak gaat absoluut niet over onze gevoelens die al dan niet gekwetst zouden zijn (we zijn wel meer gewoon). Waar het om gaat is dat u een amalgaam maakt dat u niet mag maken. Het gaat erom dat u Belgische Joden verantwoordelijk houdt voor iets waar zij geen vat op hebben. Wij hebben niet meer dan onze vrije meningsuiting in het Midden-Oostenconflict, maar wij hebben geen invloed op de gebeurtenissen.


U lijkt niet in te zien dat uw vergelijking fout was, want u trekt uw woorden niet in. U excuseert zich voor onze gekrenkte gevoelens, maar uw excuses hebben wij niet nodig.


U moet inzien dat de parallel die u trekt compleet verkeerd is, dat uw vage dreigementen aan het adres van de Joodse scholen ronduit schandalig zijn, dat u misbruik hebt gemaakt van uw functie als secretaris-generaal van het ACOD om een persoonlijke politieke mening gestalte te geven; u zou moeten inzien dat u als belangrijk functionaris een slecht voorbeeld stelt voor anderen die niets liever wil dan steeds dé Joden beschuldigen, en dat u op die wijze het conflict importeert naar België. Daar gaat het ons allemaal om.


In uw bericht hieronder negeert u al deze fouten.


Om af te ronden, wij zijn niet op zoek naar excuses, wel naar een terugtrekking van uw woorden. En schuwt u beslist de kritiek op Israël niet! Dat land kan daartegen en heeft, zoals alle democratische regimes, kritiek nodig. Wat wij u vragen is een blijk van inzicht in de consequenties van uw woorden.

"We have received your report but fear that you see the entire situation in error. This matter is not about our feelings. We have only our opinions about the Middle East situation, but you are holding Belgian Jews responsible for a situation over which we have no control over the events. You excuse yourself over our hurt feelings, but we don't need your apology.

You must recognize that your parallel is completely in error, that your vague threat against a Jewish school is frankly scandalous and is a misuse of your position with OCED, and you have set a poor example as an important functionary. You hold Jews responsible and bring the Middle East conflict to Belgium.

In your letter, you neglect these errors.

We are not looking for apologies or retractions. Israel can withstand criticism as any democracy must. We ask you to consider the consequences of your words."

This incident underlines how the Middle East conflict is stoking anti-Jewish feeling in the West. In Europe, the Jewish communities are being punished  for the conflict no matter what their personal feelings are vis-a-vis Israel. It is shameful.
