Deadly knife attack in Oberkirchberg: Police arrest 27-year-old man

After a knife attack against two schoolgirls on Monday in the Illerkirchberg area of Oberkirchberg, a 14-year-old girl has succumbed to her severe injuries. A 13-year-old girl was seriously injured and is also in a clinic. The alleged perpetrator is reportedly a 27-year-old man from Eritrea, who was living as a refugee in a house in Oberkirchberg, has been arrested by a police commando team. That is reported by Ulm police.

Around 7:30, witnesses reported to police that in Oberkirchberg, two girls were attacked and injured. The alerted rescue service immediately took care of the 13 and 14-year-olds and took them to a clinic. There, the 14-year-old, a German of immigrant background, died during the day. The ongoing autopsy should bring a clear indication of the exact cause of death. The police immediately began investigating. They learned that the attacker was from a neighboring asylum center and reportedly fled back there after the crime. As the police searched there with special forces, they found three asylum-seekers from Eritrea. They took two of them to the police station. The third was injured and had to be treated medically.

Injured girl dies in clinic

According to what is known to investigators thus far, the girls were reportedly attacked with a knife. The girls were at the time on their way to school. The 14-year-old had to be resuscitated at the scene after the act before she was taken to the clinic, where, despite all the doctors' efforts, she died.

The 13-year-old, also a German citizen, was seriously, but not critically injured, (and was treated in a clinic.

The 27-year-old man from Eritrea, who was found injured in the (asylum) center, is suspected of having attacked the girls. The police found a knife on him, which is the suspected murder weapon. The suspect is presently under police guard at the hospital. The State Prosecutor's office and police are investigating why the attack on the girls happened and if the suspect and the two girls previously knew each other.

The police stress that they are aware that events like this cause fear and emotion. They, therefore, request that no general suspicion against foreigners, those seeking protection, or asylum-seekers be raised or that such suspicions be encouraged or supported.
