The Clinton-Weinstein Connection

The history of sleaze surrounding the Clintons never ceases. We now learn that actress Lena Dunham, who was an ardent campaigner for Hillary Clinton in the 2016 election, warned the campaign at the highest levels that they should steer clear of Hollywood mogul Harvey Weinstein because his history of sexual assaults was eventually going to  become public knowledge. Weinstein hosted fund raisers for Hillary as well as donated and acted as a bundler for her campaign. In addition, noted magazine editor, Tina Brown, gave Hillary's  2008 campaign the same counsel. Hillary, of course, ignored the advice.

This should not come as any surprise. Had Mrs. Clinton been a person of integrity, she would have broken off all contacts with someone like Weinstein when she learned what had been an open secret in Hollywood for many years. The problem is that both the Clintons have surrounded themselves with sleazy people and taken in sleazy money for decades. The revelations about the corrupt Clinton Foundation area testament to that.

And I seem to vaguely recall those long ago days when Bill Clinton was president and Hillary was first lady. She got juicy tidbits about Bill's behavior as woman after woman came forward to charge her husband with everything from consensual affairs to unwanted sexual advances to outright rape. Unfortunately for her, the public was also getting the tidbits.

And what was Hillary's reaction? She defended him and organized a group of White House insiders to attack the women as "nuts and sluts" and "trailer park trash". She told Matt Lauer (Yes, that Matt Lauer) that she and her husband were the  victims of a "vast right-wing conspiracy". Yet, it eventually was shown that Bill Clinton committed perjury when he gave a  sworn deposition that he had never had a relationship (in the White House) with Monica Lewinsky, a lie. He also settled with Paula Jones, one of his accusers, who charged that Bill had exposed himself in an Arkansas hotel room, an act of, shall we say, Weinsteinian proportions.

And you think Hillary would cut off relations with Weinstein when she learned that he was the same kind of sexual predator that her husband was? If she can send Bill out on the campaign trail for her, why would she refuse Weinstein's money?

The Clintons will likely never be prosecuted for anything because not even a Trump Justice Department wants to get involved in the political mess that would create in our country. I hope I am wrong and I will live to see these two grifters brought to justice, but I am not optimistic. It is hard to look at the careers of these two and still argue that everyone is equal before the law, and I say that regretfully as a retired Justice Department agent.

I do think, however, that  for remainder of their lives, the reputations of Bill and Hillary Clinton will continue to suffer from one revelation after another as to their corruption. Hopefully, future Democratic candidates will be advised not to get anywhere near the Clintons or their money, and that they will follow that advice. But then again, I am not optimistic.
