Kim Davis' Dilemma

I am having trouble with this mess in Rowan County, KY, where the country clerk, Kim Davis, has been jailed for refusing (on religious grounds) to issue marriage licenses to same-sex couples.

Here is my take: I am not in agreement with same-sex marriage, as I have stated before. It's not a question of hating anybody. I just feel that marriage is between a man and woman. Having said that, the Supreme Court has spoken, and their ruling applies nation-wide. It is no longer up to any state or counry. It is now the law of the land.

Ms Davis, citing her religious (Christian) beliefs, has refused to grant marriage licenses to same sex couples. As a result, she now sits in jail.

Folks, with this new law, we are going to have to find a way to resolve these issues surrounding county clerks and bakery owners without people being thrown in jail or being sued into bankruptcy.

In a way I sympathize with Ms Davis, and in a way I don't. I don't think she should be in jail, nor do I think it is right for the activists on the other side and certain media to be digging up dirt on her previous life before she became a committed Christian four years ago. On the other hand, I think it would be prudent for her to find another line of work where her religious convictions won't be compromised. (She is elected and cannot be simply fired by the country.)

On a larger scale, I fear that the gay rights lobby is going to really go after those who oppose same sex marriage. I would hope these issues can be resolved in a more civilized and friendly manner though I am not sure just how. What I don't want to see is activist gays trying to destroy people and thus, incur the anger and disdain of the wider population. This has the potential of turning into a vicious circle.
