How dare he?
Far beyond, "God is great", Ahmad knows that phrase has other significance to our sensitivities. As pointed out in the article, this is what terrorists yell when they are committing murder. There is an element of it that says "conquest".
Ahmad and his defenders can spin this any way they want. He knows he was sending a message to that audience, and it wasn't that God is great.

God is great. Aren't you a Christian? What's your problem with it. It seems to be one of the few things that Christians, Muslims and Jews agree on.
Perhaps the next speaker should have recited Abraham Lincoln's Second Inaugural Address.
