Robert Reich on Drugs
Robert Reich, who was Bill Clinton's Secretary of Labor and a real "Workers of the world unite type", is now teaching economics at UC Berkeley and opining on the evils of greedy capitalism, for which he gets paid $240,000 for one lousy-and I mean lousy-course.
Now comes Mr Reich opining on something else he knows nothing about-drugs and Central America. Reich says that we (the US) are responsible for all those kids coming up from Central America because we-get this- won't legalize drugs.

Dope. (No pun intended.)

Well, we created the market that makes growing, processing and transporting drugs the most lucrative source of income available, so essentially, all those Latin American countries are infested with gangs that can afford better weapons that the local government, because of our habits.
Legalization would mean we pay all the prices for our drug habits, instead of foisting the worst of it off on our neighbors. There is a certain justice in that. If heroin were available over the counter at every pharmacy, legally, as it was circa 1900, then we'd have some social problems to deal with, but the drug gangs of Latin America would be losing their oxygen.
I know Gary, our government paid you most of your working life to put your life on the line fighting drug gangs and trying to keep the stuff out. You fought some really nasty characters, but you didn't keep the stuff out. Can't fault your work -- but the policy left something to be desired.
