Jane Fonda: Shame on UCLA

Jane Fonda in Hanoi

Ayaan Hirsi Ali isn't good enough to give the commencement address at Brandeis and Condoleeza Rice isn't good enough to give the commencement at Rutgers, but UCLA will be welcoming Jane Fonda with open arms.

It makes me want to puke.

You know what else makes me want to puke? This:

“We are truly honored to have Jane Fonda speak at this year’s commencement ceremony,” said Teri Schwartz, dean of UCLA School of Theater, Film and Television. “Jane is a visionary and a remarkable artist who has spent her life telling deeply powerful stories that have moved and inspired audiences worldwide to action for the greater good and to a greater understanding of our common humanity through her films, philanthropic efforts and personal journeys.”

Below is the Daily Bruin report, to which I have added my reader comment.

UCLA just spit on every Vietnam vet with this move.

Not every Vietnam veteran... some marched with her after they came home.

I was kind of late in realizing we weren't fighting for freedom and democracy after all, and should bring the troops home, because the mission was unworthy of their sacrifice. At first I believed everything President Johnson told us about the war. But George Romney was right about it.

I remember wishing Jane Fonda would stick to being Barbarella and stay out of the anti-war movement. It seemed somehow tainted by her presence, and that's before she made her trip to Hanoi.

Doonesbury nailed what's really wrong with Jane... a Sunday cartoon strip in which she patronizingly offers some complementary exercise tapes to the black woman cleaning the building where she had her office. Second-to-punch line: "You do it because you wanna, I do it because I gotta."
