As we all (at least in Orange County) know, President Obama is coming to give the UC Irvine commencement address at Anaheim Stadium this year. Here are the exciting details as known at this point.
There will be some 8,000 graduates as well as 4 guests per graduate. By my calculations, that makes 40,000 people. Full-time tenured faculty are also invited. They will be in full robe regalia-or whatever they call it. Sorry, adjuncts. You are not invited for this one (though normally, you would be). Faculty in the UCI Extension are also left out as are Micky and Goofy.
Now here is the fun part: The ceremony is scheduled for 11 am. But that's only for the President. Faculty are expected to be in the stadium at 7 am and graduates at 6:30 am. If the President is flying directly in from Washington, I estimate, he will be somewhere over Kentucky at that time. More likely, however, he will be coming from Los Angeles on the freeway after a round of fund raisers the previous evening.
Further details to follow.
(No, I will not be there-unless, of course, there is a protest outside the stadium.)
