The Day After in Egypt: Terror Takes the Inevitable Turn

Bomb blast hits bus in Egypt's capital, wounding 5

The wave of terror is now taking that inevitable turn as a bus is hit by a bomb in Cairo. Now they are randomly going after innocent civilians. This in the wake of the government declaring the Muslim Brotherhood a terrorist organization.

Of course, the MB is denying responsibility and the government has yet to show proof that the Brotherhood carried out the bombing in Mansoura and this latest attack. One thing is for sure: The situation in Egypt is getting worse. We will now see how American leaders react to the Egyptian crackdown. My guess is that Obama, Kerry and company will side with the Brotherhood. It will be yet another example of their misguided Middle East policy.

Egypt is a sovereign nation, and they can get much larger financial assistance from the Saudis and Qatar than from the U.S.

So what do you want our president to do? Send in the marines? Or not?

One reason presidents send troops into situations they should have known to stay out of is, they first feel impelled to say something about atrocities committed half way around the world, then, when nothing changes, the honor and respect of the United States requires that we back up words with action so people don't think we're pushovers. Then we find ourselves in a quagmire we really can't handle -- not without a commitment of blood and treasure we really are not willing to make.

If President Obama refrains from making firm speeches and drawing red lines when he knows neither the people nor the congress will support firm military action, he's being uncommonly wise for a president. (He may have learned something about drawing rhetorical red lines, n'est-ce pas?
