Bob "Feelin" Filner Fights on in San Diego

"Like sands through the hour glass, these are the days of our lives"

"I'm just a friendly guy."

Lest we make too much fun of New York and its Weenergate circus, those of us out here on the Left Coast have our own Weenergate in San Diego, where Mayor Bob "Feelin'" Filner has just announced he was going into therapy. But he ain't resigning. That would be most unDemocratic. Even better the whole press conference took on the tone of some Laurel and Hardy act.

You see, Feelin' Filner has a penchant for groping women who venture too close to him. Already, seven women have come forward to lodge complaints about his moves and words to them over the years. And these aren't Paula Jones types; they are professional women. Throughout it all, Bob has flashed that winning smile and simply explained that he's a hugger-of both men and women. For the past couple of weeks now, he has been ignoring calls for him to resign-including from within his own party. (Bob was a Democratic member of Congress as part of the progressive wing of the Democratic party-whatever the other wing is.) Even DNC Chair Debbie Wasserman-Schultz (shown below discussing the scandal with President Obama) has called for his resignation.

So just a few minutes ago, Bob walked out to hold a press conference. He began by reading his prepared statement, in which he announced that he did, indeed, have a problem and had apologized to everyone involved.

"Let me be absolutely clear," he began. Then, suddenly after a minute, all the audio went out. After standing there awkwardly for a couple of minutes, Bob and his entourage walked back into the room from which they had come while technicians replaced the microphone then the entire podium. And still nobody knew if "Feelin"' Filner was going to resign or not. After 5-10 minutes, Bob re-emerged and began his speech all over again.

"Let me be absolutely clear," he began.

Eventually Bob told us that in a few days, he will be entering an intensive two-week program to deal with his issues. But the good news is this: He will be receiving daily updates on the city's business every morning and evening. And then, hopefully, he will return a better man, blah, blah blah, woof woof woof, quack quack quack.

He then turned and walked back into his bunker without taking questions. No resignation.

And pity the poor folks at MSNBC trying to deal with this scandal because Bob is a Democrat. This morning right after Bob was on, some MSNBC contributing talking head was telling host Touré (or is it Tourè?) that Dems were worried that Republicans would use this issue to combat the Democratic theme of the Republicans' "War on Women"-whether it has merit or not!!

Can't make this stuff up, Folks.
