Commentator Mark Steyn (a naturalized American from Canada), has commented on the efforts of the York (Ontario, Canada) police to shut down a speech by Pam Geller in a Toronto synagogue-by threatening the sponsoring rabbis,

I am no authority on the laws of free speech in Canada, but this quote from Steyn strikes home:
"According to Brian Sibley, Inspector Ricky Veerappen, the head of the Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Bureau, is himself Muslim – which may or may not explain why he’s strutting about like the Ontario branch of Saudi Arabia’s Mutaween. Dig this example of a 21st century policeman’s thinking:
Veerappan apparently told Kaplan Geller’s speech “would not be endorsed by York Regional Police.”
(Since when is it up to the police to “endorse” speech?)"
Again, we are talking about Canada, but what is the rationale behind the York Police having a "Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Bureau"?

"Ottawa Citizen" is right on the money. Geller is an odious bigot, and comes across in photos with a haunting look that Fousesquawk lampoons aggressively in those he cares to lampoon, but she has just as much right to speak in public as George Lincoln Rockwell, Louis Farrakhan, and Michelle Bachman (none of whom would appreciate appearing in the same sentence with the others).
American cities used to have police department "Red Squads" that performed the same function that this diversity squad in York appears to have undertaken. It wasn't right then and it isn't right now. In Canada, it may, or may not, be consistent with the constitution. It never was here.
