Well, another little tidbit has come out courtesy of the Star Beacon. An item was left behind by the shooter that wasn't previously mentioned. In addition, we now know some of the statements made by the shooter to police.

So now you know the rest of the story.
Is this bad for peaceful, law abiding and truly moderate Muslims in the US? Undoubtedly. Yet it is crucial that Americans know the level of threat. If we now need to be concerned about our safety when we are in a church or synagogue, then the public has a right to know.

This is what its all about. Every son who shoots his father has some excuse of the sort. This guy happened to use Islam. If he hadn't toyed with Islam, it would have been something else.

I assume his father did not respect his conversion or his new religion. Blasphemy, perhaps? The fact that he took a Koran with him to the shooting pretty much says it all. This was an act of jihad.
No Gary, this was not an act of jihad, because the troubled young man was acting on his own. If you uncover a well coordinated effort to arm young Muslim men all over the country to march into churches of God in Christ to shoot their fathers, then we would have an act of jihad.
This was an isolated instance of an angry young man shooting his father -- the fact that he took a Koran with him just tells us which excuse he was adopting to justify his action in his own mind. There's always something.
Ahhhh, just another prime example of the fact that felons have no problem getting guns when they want, to do with whatever they wish , and that efforts aimed exclusively at law-abiding gun owners are ineffective at stopping them.
Obviously, this guy either was not caught/prevented by the instant background check provisions (which is admittedly imperfect, having a few false positives/negatives) or, most likely and almost certainly, he got the gun illegally on the street. Even if he had been caught by the check, it is extremely unlikely that he would have been prosecuted for that attempt, which is at least one serious Federal felony.
And as I have previously pointed out, while he can be prosecuted for felon in possession, if this jurisdiction has registration/licensing requirements, he may not, per the SCOTUS and other courts, be prosecuted for failing to register/license himself and/or the weapon, as that would constitute a violation of his 5th Amendment right against "self-incrimination". So there you go.
Even when you have a father/son situation, seems to me the shooting of a Church of God in Christ member, in that church, with the apparently Muslim shooter having a Koran and spouting off about it and Allah as described, fairly reeks of violent Islamic thought/practice whether it is technically jihad or not.
