An official of the Kentucky Democratic party has come out and said that two members of the group Progress Kentucky taped the conversation by Republican senator Mitch McConnell and his aides through the door in a hallway.

This is a pretty risky and bizarre way of taping someone surreptitiously, I must say. As I previously indicated, as a DEA agent, I participated in consensual taping and also legal wiretaps (non-consensual). Never did I attempt anything such as being described. The risks of getting caught is just too high. Hopefully, the surveillance cameras will corroborate or refute the claim that the taping was done in the way described. It is possible, but I have my doubts. Perhaps, they were in an adjacent room.
This, of course, is the same group that previously suggested that McConnell was in favor of trade with China because his wife, Elaine Chao, was Chinese-American. Pretty despicable group, if you ask me.
We should also note that Mother Jones is the site that was given the tapes and ran with them. Its founder, David Corn, is a frequent talking head on MSNBC. They are not talking right now.
Probably on the advice of their lawyers. Good advice.
Stand by.
Update: 4-11-13 3:30 pm PST: I can't even find this story on NBC's news site.
