For a department that doesn't crack very many cases, DHS sure has a big interest in having a lot of ammo. Now Congress is asking questions.

Of course, agents need to go to the range and practice firing, and God knows our Border Patrol agents need them as opposed to those bean bags they are given to do battle against the smuggling cartels along the border. However, these numbers just don't add up. They are staggering and don't make sense. At the very least, this is a waste of tax-payer money. Worse, it looks like a run on the market. Something ain't right here.

In the testimony, DHS stated that the agents needed to have 200 rounds of ammo per quarter. That would would be 600 rounds used per year for qualification. A large local Law Enforcement Agency gives the officers 50 rounds of duty ammo per year, which is returned after the year and exchanged for another 50 rounds. For qualification each three months, officers are required to qualify with 20 rounds (another 20 is used if the officer does not qualify in that course of fire). So, 60 to 120 rounds are used per year. This is in comparison to the 600 rounds of DHS ammo, which is short of the 1000 rounds claimed for use by the DHS for each agent. Either the agents for the DHS are worlds worst marksmen, or they cannot learn to shoot.
One asks the question, why is there 6 rounds of DHS ammunition ready for each man, women and child in the United States? I hope that the Congress asks these questions.
