Another Feinstein Letter to a Constituent

Below are copies of correspondence from Paul Schnee of the Zionist Organization of America and Dianne Feinstein, Democratic Senator from California regarding the nomination of Chuck Hagel as defense secretary. I am posting it with Paul's consent.

Dear Senator Feinstein,
Thank you for your response to my objections to Chuck Hagel being confirmed as Secretary of Defense.

I was disappointed to read that like the Iranian mullahs, a group of Islamic fascists who seek our ruin, you also endorse Hagel's nomination and wish to have him confirmed.

After witnessing his befuddled, risible and woefully inadequate performance last week during a blizzard of conflicting positions and taking into consideration his record on opposing sanctions against Iran, the 2008 "surge" in Iraq, his unwillingness to designate the Iranian Republican Guard as a terrorist organization, his startling ignorance about the Obama Administration's policy with regard to preventing Iran from becoming a nuclear power, his agreement with a questioner from Al-Jazeera that America is the "world's bully" and his frequent anti-Semitic remarks and actions, which demonstrate a core of hostility towards Israel, any sentient schoolboy would swiftly conclude that Hagel is unfit for high office. Being wounded twice in Vietnam does not a competent chief executive make.

In 2005 when President Bush nominated Harriet Miers to be an Associate Justice of the Supreme Court there was a storm of bi-partisan, but mainly Republican, opposition to her nomination. This was due to her perceived lack of experience as a judge, her apparent dearth of knowledge about constitutional law, the absence of any papers written by her and the fact that she had never argued a case before the Supreme Court. Within 22 days Ms. Miers asked President Bush to withdraw her nomination. It's time for Chuck Hagel to do the same. You will be well aware that this is not a minority view even within your own party but not, alas, amongst America's enemies who are overjoyed at the possibility of having someone in charge of our national defense whose tendency is to form his opinions and judgments in a spirit of complete detachment from the facts.

It seems that Chuck Hagel is unable or, worse still, unwilling to distinguish between the fire and the fire brigade. This is the hallmark of an appeaser and would make his tenure at the Department of Defense a period of mortal peril for the life of our country and our allies.

I must respectfully ask that you reconsider your position and vote against this awful man who, despite extensive coaching, looked as if a trick cigar had exploded in his mouth during most of the proceedings last week. With all of the talent available to us surely we can find a much better nominee even if it's a Democrat!

Yours sincerely,

Paul Schnee

Dear Mr. Schnee:
Thank you for contacting me to express your opposition to the President's nomination of former Senator Chuck Hagel to be Secretary of Defense. I appreciate hearing your views on this matter, and I welcome the opportunity to respond.
I strongly believe that a president is entitled to his cabinet selections unless there is something in an individual's record or background that is disqualifying, which I do not believe to be the case with Senator Hagel. I worked closely with Senator Hagel when he was a member of the Senate Intelligence Committee, and I believe that he is more than qualified to implement the Administration's policies in Afghanistan and around the world, as well as to manage the Department of Defense in an era of reduced spending.
Once again, thank you for writing. While we disagree on this issue, I hope that you will continue to keep me informed about issues of importance to you. Should you have any further comments or questions, please feel free to contact my Washington, D.C. office at (202) 224-3841, or visit my website at www.feinstein.senate.gov. Best regards.

Sincerely yours,

Dianne Feinstein
United States Senator

Can you say, "form letter"? I wonder if anyone else has gotten that same writing with the exact same text.

I suppose it would take Chuck Hagel wearing an SS uniform and giving the one-armed salute for Dear Diane F to change her mind.

It is a shame that most of the voters in California are on the government teat.

I got the same response to a complaint I wrote her about this nomination.

The ONLY thing that matters is that Obama wants this guy. They think alike. No matter what the consequences, they want America's role in the world reduced. America has been responsible in their view for all the problems in the world and it is time that we fix that. First of all, we have to reduce our military capability so our options are limited and our enemies can probe where they will without the slightest concern about what the American response will be.
Another "Obama - no matter what - disaster."

That's actually a letter that specifically responds to the point of view of the writer, acknowledging a disagreement. Most pols don't do that.

When I wrote to my senators raising debts about Elena Kagan's qualifications to be on the Supreme Court, I received a form letter thanking me for writing and explaining how fully committed the senator is to supporting Kagan's nomination.

Miggie! Recovered from the election deary? At least enough to have regained your voice? "This election can't come soon enough."
