Gallaudet University's Thought Police on the Job




Imagine being a chief diversity coordinator at a university who believes in the traditional form of marriage. Imagine signing a petition to put a measure on a state ballot that would affirm traditional  marriage. Imagine being suspended by your university.

Gallaudet is a university in the Washington DC area that serves the deaf.

This is outrageous, and I would say that if this lady was fighting for same-sex marriage as well. Being against same sex marriage is not being anti-gay-even if some of my readers think it is. Why should it follow that being a diversity coordinator should mean taking one position or the other on gay marriage? This is just another example of the rank idiocy that dominates in an institution (academia) where intelligence should be prevailing.

A university is supposed to stand for universality of thought and opinions. Political correctness is a direct contradiction of that principle. Unfortunately, that glorified term, "diversity" does not apply to different opinions-even if they reflect  traditional American values like belief in God, country, etc.

So if suspending university personnel because they oppose same-sex marriage is now the norm, I invite anyone who wants to write to UC Irvine and demand my termination as a part-time teacher.

After sleeping on this over night, I see three salient points:

1) I believe Gallaudet is a private university, so it is not bound by the same laws mandating neutrality that a public university is. You know, free enterprise, freedom to form institutions that embody certain privately chosen values, whether anyone else approves or not... think Hillsdale.

2) Thanks to the tireless work of union thugs and their legislative allies, there ARE laws which restrict employer retaliation against employees for the exercise of constitutional rights, especially First Amendment rights, on their own time, outside of the scope of employment. The woman fired may have a cause of action under these laws. Thank you union thugs.

3) Whether there is any cause of legal action against Gallaudet, each and every one of us has the right to condemn what the university did as wrong, even if they had a legal right to make the decision. These are two different things, too often conflated in modern political discourse.

For myself, I recognize the demand for licensing same-sex couples as a live controversy, not a settled matter of universal mores. The administration of Gallaudet apparently considers the case for gay marriage so well established that opposing it is tantamount to burning the American flag. Oh wait, that's legal too.

OK, let's try again... tantamount to... advocating repeal of the Thirteenth Amendment. Actually, advocacy is legal, even for that proposition. Just don't try to hold someone in involuntary servitude as if the amendment didn't exist.

I don't much care if a state legislature licenses same-sex couples. If they can do that, and get re-elected, apparently a majority of the people of the state are OK with the idea. But, its not a right. Same sex couples and heterosexual couples are not similarly situated. Biology is heteronormative, whether the human imagination is or not.

Its a sad commentary on American politics that people pile on to discussions about some guy in Dearborn getting soda splashed on his car flying an Israeli flag, or any little screed about what Obama said last night, but nobody much cares about a woman losing her job for the exercise of free speech?

Or did I analyze it so well that Gary, Findalis, elwood, Miggie, Squid, and all the anony mouses are in full agreement?
