Another UC Disruption

"We are the regents!"

Those poor University of California regents just can't have a meeting without students disrupting them. It happened recently up in the Bay area, and it happened today at UC Riverside. The LA Times has the below report.

No arrests? No expulsions? No pepper spray? What's going on here?

Here's more from KPSP Local News 2 (somewhere):

I have the solution for this whole mess about budget cuts and all this other grief. Here it is:

The UC system needs to eliminate all those useless departments dedicated to women's studies, gay/lesbian/ transgender studies, all ethnic studies, plus those silly programs up at UC Santa Cruz called Community Studies and History of Consciousness. They do not lead to jobs or professions except becoming the next generation of professors. Who needs a bunch of chauvinistic professors glorifying whatever it is they are in order to make students feel good about themselves while at the same time thinking of themselves as victims? It's a joke. These topics can be covered in a course or two. There is no justification for having entire departments devoted to them.

The UC system is overloaded with highly-paid administrators as compared to teachers. You don't need some associate chancellor or asst. dean writing memos on saving money on Christmas trees or paper clips. The system has too many chiefs and not enough Indians (smart Indians).

The UC system needs to get away from their recent emphasis on accepting more out-of-state students at the expense of California students, whose parents pay taxes to support the UC system. Sure they want to have more students paying three times the amount in tuition that in-state students pay. It is not fair, however.

UC does not need a university mansion for its president. He is being paid enough money to have his own mansion.

No student tuition fees should be given to on-campus student groups.

Finally, students should understand that while they have the right to peacefully demonstrate, they don't have the right to disrupt, take over buildings, and drive people having meetings to another room to do their business.

They would never get away with it at Fousesquawk University.

If the Regents were smart they would raise tuition by 50%, then get rid of all the bs programs and demand very high standards.

After finally getting rid of the fluff, they could lower tuition by 80%. The schools would be running in the black again.

@ Findalis,

I am with you Findalis and Gary. My daughter is finishing her last year and one-half at a CSU. She already has two AA degrees in a area that will help her gain immediate employment in corporate. She had to take a sociology class at this CSU, in order to graduate. The instructor did not teach. She used Marxist indoctrination on the class. At the end of the class, this instructor announced that she was a Marxist, which I told my daughter a few weeks into this class. Is this is one of the classes you and Gary are talking about?

Squid,

I may be getting jaded, but I'm starting to think they are all Marxist.

Just one of them Squid.

@ Fidalis,

Only one Marxist that actually identified herself as a "Traveler". I am sure there are many more "Travelers" who are not out in the open. I remember that if an educator in California wanted a credential or teach, they would have to sign a document stating that they are not a Communist. Now, it seems that you sign a document stating that you are a Communist.

Then I'd have to drop out of school. I pay for (most) of my own education out of pocket/with some limited financial aid.

I don't see how that helps anyone, me, the state, or the next generation. Before the "UCSC Community Studies Major" comments (which I partially agree with), I'm a Information Computer Science Major specializing in Software Engineering - not a dead-end career.

I think we could all agree on the curriculum. I would not, however, credit this professor with having the slightest idea what a Marxist is, and I would submit that they flatter themselves to think that they are one.

I say that without prejudice to whether there is anything particularly good or bad to being a Marxist, although Karl Marx, after hearing a self-styled Marxist speak, announced "I am not a Marxist."

Anyone know if there is still a Carl Marks Cafe in Moscow, Idaho?

@ Siarlys,

Again you pass cosmic judgement upon a story, without evidence or inquiry. This Professor is a graduate of the New School, New York, which was founded by Marxist types from Europe, who were escaping Nazi Germany and the countries that were coming under its domination. Also, the Professor graduated UC Berkley, in sociology, which is dominated by Marxist thinkers.

Any other questions Siarlys?

Questions? You haven't said anything Squid. You are so gullible when it comes to someone telling you they are "a Marxist." If you met someone at a bar and they said "I'm a famous Hollywood actor" would you take their word for it?

First, just try to get three Marxists in a room to agree on what the Sam Hill Marxism is, and not have at least one of them deny that at least one of the others IS a Marxist. Then tell me whose side you would take.

Then, you tell me that the New School was founded by "Marxist types," which is pretty vague and concedes that neither you nor they know authoritatively what exactly a "Marxist" really is anyway. You also don't mention how many years went by from the founding to the time this professor graduated to now.

The American Federation of Labor was "Founded by Marxist types." Whittaker Chambers was a card carrying, true believing communist, until he wasn't.

And then you tell me that because he graduated from a university and a department which in your authoritative view is "dominated by Marxist thinkers" (whatever that means) therefore he must be one? What about all the bona fide conservative Republican students who graduated from UC-Berzerkely? The ones who organize complaints about the left-wing atmosphere in the place? Did they all become Marxists by the time they got their degrees?

You make less sense than a two-bit self-appointed holy roller exorcising demons under the hood of some lady's car. The word "Marxist" is without any useful meaning, and this professor is doing no more than awarding himself a red ribbon to fatuously proclaim that he is one. If you want to aid and abet his pomposity, go ahead.

There you go again Siarlys. Shooting from the hip with your cosmic judgement. You should have questions, not allegations. This is called the scientific way. If you asked questions, which you did not, I could have informed you about the finer details of this Professor and the collection of readings (two inches thick) with authors who have been identified by others and myself, as Progressives, Socialists and Marxists.

You tell 'em, Squib! Cosmic judgement - haw! Nailed him! Who does this guy think he is, Galactus?

Doesn't he realize that guys like Obama are nothing but a bunch of fascist anarchist pacifist communist socialist Nazis? And how did he get that way? By going to an IVY LEAGUE school where he failed ALL of his classes!

Good thing we have somebody as smart as squib to tell it like it is!

"This is called the scientific way" said Squid, without bothering to define his terms. You make less sense than the majority opinion of the Massachusetts Supreme Court in the Goodrich, case, where they also failed to define their terms before beginning an analysis.

"When I use a word" said Humpty Dumpty, "it means exactly what I choose it to mean." Now Squid not only says that a "Marxist" is exactly what Squid chooses it to mean, or what some idiot professors chooses it to mean, but further, "scientific" means whatever Squid chooses it to mean.

Well, you have the support of the idol worshipper. How does that make a person alleged to be Jewish feel? 'The Lord Thy God is a Trinity of Eagle, Flag and Country, and you shall rant about Marxists before all of them.'

@ Sairlys,

Check out Socratic method.

A man who wants me to offer questions, not answers, suggests using Socratic method. I think if I had been a contemporary Athenian, I might have offered the point-headed liberal a draught of hemlock myself. He's not all he's cracked up to be. I prefer straight-forward facts to mind-numbing speculative theorizing.
