Is Hillary Waiting in the Wings?

President Obama is getting ready to do what he used to do best-make another speech. Problem is the smooth-talking orator, who virtually talked his way through America's front door has now talked his way out the back door. Nobody but the curious or the hopelessly naive are interested in what he has to say. Most expect it to be just another (campaign) speech, in which he will blame our troubles on his predecessor, bad luck, and Republican opposition. Play it again, Sam.


Surely, he will unwrap his "long-awaited" jobs package, which will involve more government intervention, spending, taxes on the rich, and maybe even a new government agency or even department.

What he should announce is that government is going to just get out of the way.

But he won't. He is much too ideological to change course. He will continue his policies to the point that our economy totally collapses and then try to rebuild it in his socialistic mold.

That fact is though that the public has woken up to what Obama really represents, and they don't like it. His favorable ratings continue to fall, and I don't see that reversing course because he won't reverse course. Even his own party and liberals are turning against him. Much of his base is thinking about taking that well-earned "summer cruise" come November 2012.

This leads to an interesting scenario. I call it the Torricelli scenario. Remember a few years ago when Senator Robert Torricelli of New Jersey, mired in scandal, was running for re-election? His poll numbers were so low it was clear that he would never be re-elected. That's when the party steped in and made him an offer he couldn't refuse. He was convinced to drop out of the race in the waning days of the election and let Frank Lautenberg step in. It worked. Lautenberg won and still makes a mess of things representing New Jersey in the Senate while "the Torch" has quietly disappeared.

So what happens in the coming year if Obama continues to ruin the economy and his poll numbers slip toward the low 30s? Do the wiser heads of the Democratic party (whoever they may be) take that walk down Pennsylvania Avenue and have that heart to heart talk with Obama? If that happens, would Obama put aside that massive ego of his and agree to make the Lyndon Johnson speech? That would be real CHANGE now, wouldn't it?

I am not predicting this, but it is within the realm of possibility. I assume Obama will not change course, the economy will worsen and Obama's favorable ratings will continue to drop. Whether he could be convinced to step aside is, given his ego and ideological bent, doubtful. But if that were to happen, we all know what is for sure, don't we?
