Al Gore Split-Another Woman?????

Al and Tipper Gore insist that there were no extra-marital affairs involved in their separation.

We're not so sure.

Who says there was no other woman involved, hmmmm? Or Mother Earth, perhaps?

Hey, I'm only kidding. Please save your cards and letters. Can't you take a joke?

I've been looking for at least a slightly-related topic to inform you that I'm about 2/3 of the way through Ayaan Hirsi Ali's latest book, Nomad. It's really good. You should check it out.

I realize that this post has nothing to do with it, but the joke was so lame that I figured it would be good to distract from that fact.

Ayaan Hirsi Ali is one of my favorite heroes. When you're done, you should her Infidel.

Do you know that many Western feminists hate her? She makes them uncomfortable with issues they would rather ignore, which I have pointed out.

Speaking of nomads, how come you didn't like my joke about Gore? Actually, it is pretty lame, but when you consider how many Al Gore jokes there are to compete with....

I've already read Infidel. I was worried that the new book would cover too much of the same territory, but I can assure you that's not the case. If you liked the last one, check out this one.

I am aware of the issue with certain feminists. That was one of those blog posts where I agreed with you 100%. There was some commenter who was saying that she didn't have the right to say what she was saying, but you and I both gave him/her a verbal smackdown, explaining the concept of free speech (and the fact that you don't have the right to not be offended.)

It was as Johnson/Fouse team-up! It was like King Kong and Godzilla fighting on the same side!

And yeah, I know the Gore jokes - many of them based on things he never even said.

Or did.

Actually, I got a real smackdown on the blog Alexandria, to which I contribute. Some of the folks over there make you look like Spiro Agnew. One woman said what happens in Islam is irrelevant to Western women or something like that so I should stop criticizing feminists.

I just checked out that blog today - looks like an interesting place. I just might contribute, and when it comes to this issue, you know that I have your back.

And I had to look up Spiro Agnew - a little before my time. VP to Tricky Dick. (I was born when he was in office.) I figured something along those lines.

I think this one may have been before my time... or I missed it.

In my seldom humble opinion, Gary exaggerates the nature of the arguments responding to his position. I can't find where anyone said Islam is irrelevant to western women, and when an aggrieved party has to summarize "or something like that," it suggests they weren't paying attention to exactly what was said to them.

I'm ambivalent about Ayaan Hirsi Ali. Islam is no more definitively anti-woman than certain Christian and Jewish texts I could cite. A good argument could be made that the second and third rashidun caliphs substituted common Arabic cultural norms for the teachings of Muhammed. Ayaan may be perfectly sincere -- or an opportunist who knows the buttons to push to find herself a comfortable niche. Perhaps even both. I wouldn't write her off, but I wouldn't unreservedly embrace her either. She's not high on my reading list.

Siarlys,

Technically, you are correct. We have to go back deeper tyo an article I wrote about gays in Iran to where the issue arose.

"Recently, I was involved in a blog discussion on this site which began as a discussion on gay marriage. Somehow, it morphed into the treatment of gays and women in Islam. The only reaction I received is that what goes on in Islamic countries is not relevant to the US."

Why don't you check the thread on that posting?

As I've mentioned before, you are so prolific in your posting (I'm sure you must be retired or you wouldn't have so much time), and so camouflaged with an array of high-memory digital images, not always relevant to the text, that I find it difficult to locate anything you previously posted. If you can provide a link when you say that, I'd be happy to look them up.
