Lou Piniella: "Go Get'em, Ryan"

Final Score:
Reds 5
Cubs 3

Today, in Cincinnati, the Waveland Street champs, the Cubs, were leading the Reds 3-2in the bottom of the 7th inning with starter Ryan Dempster, a right-hander, still on the mound. The Reds were batting and had 2 runners on with 2 outs. Coming to bat was the Reds' most dangerous hitter, left-handed Joey Votto. Slowly, Cub manager Lou Piniella (pictured below minutes before) trudged out to the mound. Warming up in the bullpen was left-hander Sean Marshall. It seemed a slam dunk that Piniella would bring in Marshall, who is death on left-handers. The game hung in the balance.

Upon reaching the mound, Lou stayed just long enough to see that Dempster's shirt was buttoned then turned and trudged back to the dugout.

The Cubs' announcers expressed doubt.

"Gee, I don't know about this", said announcer Bob Brenly. Out in California, watching the game while on his treadmill, your humble correspondent was thinking, "Here comes a homer."

Heh heh.

Well, you know how this story turns out. Sure enough, Votto blasts the first pitch into the cheap seats. Game over.

When reached for comment, Cub general manager Jim Hendry, still trying to sign Alfonso Soriano to a lucrative contract extension through 2020, had this to say:

"Ain't my fu--in' fault! Piniella's the fu--in' guy!"

Piniella was "unavailable for comment".
