Reichstag Fire 1933: Marinus van der Lubbe Still Cloaked in Mystery

On the night of February 27, 1933, just weeks after Adolf Hitler became chancellor of Germany, the Reichstag building in Berlin, then the seat of Germany's parliament, broke out in flames. Police discovered a young Dutchman, Marinus van der Lubbe, inside the building. Van der Lubbe, identified as a communist was charged with the arson and the Nazis immediately laid blame for the fire on the communists. This was followed by a wave of arrests and the rapid banning of other parties. Germany had become a dictatorship.

Van der Lubbe, who appeared to be mentally deficient, presented an apathetic figure at the trial, which took place in Leipzig. He was convicted and subsequently guillotined in Leipzig, where he was interred.

Van der Lubbe (l)

But the mystery of who set actually fire to the Reichstag has lingered to this day. Many have believed that the fire was actually set by the Nazis in order to bring about a crackdown on their political opponents. The question has never been settled.

Today's Dutch newspaper, Volkskrant, has an article on van der Lubbe. His remains were exhumed from a cemetery in Leipzig in late January, and an effort was made to determine through forensic testing if he had been drugged at his trial. It appears the results were inconclusive.

The below article from Volkskrant is translated by Fousesquawk.

Body of Van der Lubbe identified, no evidence that he was drugged

The body exhumed in February in Leipzig is, indeed, that of the arsonist of the German Reichstag building in 1933. But evidence that Marinus van der Lubbe was drugged during his trial not found.

The municipality of Leipzig announced that on the basis of the toxicological investigation. The investigation was originally supposed to last a  few weeks but is just now publicized. The Dutch Communist, Van der Lubbe, was sentenced to death in Leipzig in 1933 on suspicion of setting the fire in the Reichstag building in Berlin.

Through witnesses at the time and later through historians, it was repeatedly maintained that Van der Lubbe made an apathetic impression in the courtroom where he made a confession. Possibly that was because he was drugged. It is also disputed whether he was the actual arsonist.

From the toxicological investigation, thus, it does not result that he made his confession under the influence (of drugs). Nevertheless, according to the investigators, it cannot be completely ruled out that Van der Lubbe was drugged. According to the report, it is possible that no evidence was found due to the decomposition process, " due to the long period between death and the exhumation."

The investigators have been able to show that the bones in the grave are actually the remains of Van der Lubbe. DNA samples from a tooth were compared with a saliva sample from a grandson of Van der Lubbe's brother. In addition, a historical rumor was debunked. According to some sources, Van der Lubbe was buried at "double the depth" in order to prevent an exhumation, but the exhumation showed that the body was buried at the regular depth of two meters.

Marinus van der Lubbe was born in Leiden in 1909. On February 27, 1933, he was arrested by German police in the burning Reichstag building in Berlin shortly after Adolf Hitler came to power. In December of that year, Van der Lubbe was sentenced to death. On January 10, 1934, he was beheaded at the age of 24.

China, the Palestinians, and (University of Michigan Professor) Juan Cole

University of Michigan comedian Juan Cole has posted another "blockbuster" article on his curiously-named blog, Informed Comment. It concerns the latest diplomatic power move by the Chinese government. It seems China has agreed to try and get "Palestine", led by President-for-life Mahmoud Abbas, into the "prestigious" Shanghai Cooperation Organization. Even more exciting than that, China has expressed a desire to mediate that elusive Middle East peace between Israel and the Palestinians. We now take you live to Informed Comment for the exciting details.

 https://www.juancole.com/2023/06/cooperation-organization-palestinian.html

Of course, as the article points out, the other members of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization must agree to the inclusion of "Palestine". And just who are the other members?

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Member_states_of_the_Shanghai_Cooperation_Organisation

No doubt they will all agree to the inclusion of "Palestine" into the family of peace-loving nations. Maybe they can even send Juan Cole as a special envoy to the Middle East to bring about a "just and peaceful end" to the conflict.

The Trump Trial

This article first appeared in New English Review.

Now that former president Donald Trump has been indicted in Miami over his reported possession of classified documents, we can look forward to spending the rest of this year and probably next year as well absorbed in the legal process. After his arraignment this week, one of his lawyers spoke to the press outside the courthouse and spoke mostly about the dual system of justice that Trump is facing when it comes to classified documents. We recall that Hillary Clinton was never prosecuted for her handling of classified communications during her tenure as secretary of State. Nor does it appear that Joe Biden will ever be prosecuted over the classified documents he kept in several houses and offices under his control. The burning question is just how much effect will this have on Trump's trial?

As to whether this issue can be an actual defense for Trump in his trial, I anticipate that the prosecution will make every effort to keep this issue from being raised. I anticipate they will ask the judge to instruct the jury during jury instructions not to consider others who may have committed similar offenses as Trump and were not prosecuted. After all, the jury is only supposed to examine the guilt or innocence of the particular defendant on trial.

But the fact is that the controversy over this very issue is known to virtually every prospective juror in America. It is the very elephant in the back of the courtroom, so to speak. This has to work in Trump's favor. The case is being tried in Florida, where Trump has a much better chance of getting a favorable jury than he would in Washington DC. Is it out of the realm of imagination that he won't get at least 3 or 4 jurors who are sympathetic to this argument? This will likely be an issue in jury selection, but what I am driving at here is that I see a real chance of jury nullification. That means that one or more jurors may not care what the evidence says, they are sympathetic to the defendant, and they believe he is being singled out and railroaded while others get a pass from what is a politically corrupted Justice Department. (Indeed, the special prosecutor who brought this case, Jack Smith, has a controversial background as a Justice Department official in the Eric Holder DOJ.)

I am not a supporter of jury nullification. I vividly recall the OJ Simpson acquittal, which I believe was jury nullification in action. I also recall the John DeLorean acquittal back in the 1980s, which was largely due to the jury not trusting the government's actions in arresting DeLorean. That case was a joint FBI-DEA investigation in Los Angeles in which the FBI hogged the credit for the arrest-as they are wont to do-and had to accept the bulk of the criticism. The acquittal came at a time when there was much lack of public trust in the FBI, as there is now. ( I was a DEA agent who transferred from Los Angeles to Italy in 1982, hence I knew several of the DEA agents and asst. US Attorneys involved in the case, but I was never involved myself.)

Even though I don't support jury nullification in principle, I think there is a real possibility that we may see it in the Trump trial at least resulting in a hung jury. I don't think Trump or anyone should be above the law, but given the circumstances of the case and how the Justice Department and FBI have been trying to submarine this man ever since the 2016 election if it happens with Trump, I will understand the thinking.

Belgium: The 2016 Brussels Terror Attack Trial Continues

Salah Abdeslam

This week in Brussels, Jean-Philippe Mayence, attorney for the victims and relatives of the 2016 terror attack in Brussels, spoke on behalf of his clients in the continuing trial of the surviving terrorists. He directed most of his ire and indignation at defendant Salah Abdeslam, who also participated in the 2015 attacks in Paris.

The below article from today's French-language Belgian daily, La Libre, is translated by Fousesquwk.

 https://www.lalibre.be/belgique/judiciaire/2023/06/15/me-mayence-sans-filtre-face-a-salah-abdeslam-vous-etes-un-assassin-et-vous-serez-encore-plus-un-assassin-en-sortant-dici-XO47E4IN4NHGXGCJL6YEGGXHZ4/

Attorney Mayence without filter to Salah Abdeslam: "You are a murderer and you will still be a murderer when you leave here".

The tenor of the Charleroi bar held back nothing in characterizing the principal defendants.

Posted June 15, 2023 at 12:14-Updated June 15, 2023 at 12:49.

"You were a murderer, you are a murderer, and you will still be a murderer when you leave here," said Attorney Jean-Philippe Mayence, civil party lawyer to Salah Abdeslam Thursday morning in the criminal court of Brussels in the trial of the March 22, 2016 attacks. The tenor of Charleroi held nothing back in characterizing the principal defendants: Killers whose "desire for destruction goes beyond the intention to kill and goes so far as to punish the Belgian people, to shed as much blood as possible..."

The lawyer particularly attacked Salah Abdeslam, whom he called a murderer several times, trying to ridicule his line of defense.

"You are nothing to them, you represent nothing," Attorney Mayence pleaded to the jurors. "They make little signs in the box, they laugh...But from time to time, they rebel," he said sardonically, alluding to the complaints of the defendants at the beginning of the trial, on the subject of their transfer conditions from the prison to the Palace of Justice." But you will tell them the price to pay when they have pledged alliance to terrorism," he continued.

"Especially don't forget the exceptional nature of this trial, do not forget that their desire of destruction goes beyond the intention to kill and goes as far as to punish the Belgian people, to shed as much blood as possible. Apply the rules that they do not respect," he stated, affirming that, "they all participated in the attacks in Paris, and that did not prevent them from doing it again."

The freewheeling jurist was particularly angry with Salah Abdeslam, whom he characterized as "the media leader in the business of terrorism". "You were a murderer, you are a murderer, and you will still be a murderer when you leave here," he told him bluntly. "What an unpleasant attitude! He is here as if he were at an outdoor cafe. He enters and leaves the box, he laughs, he argues," he (Mayence) said to cast a negative light on the image of the responsible individual that this defendant tries to give.

For Attorney Mayence, Salah Abdeslam knew that he was participating in a new terrorist act when he returned to Brussels after having participated with the armed commandos in the Paris attacks. He went from hideout to hideout, which proves that he had the desire to rejoin an "operational cell."

UK: Three Dead in Knife/Van Attack: Terrorism?

-PA

This morning, three people were killed in what police believe was a stabbing-vehicle attack by one suspect in Nottingham, England.

Suspect in custody

It appears that the suspect, a 31-year-old man who is in custody, fatally stabbed three people on the street in two separate incidents, stole one victim's van, and ran down a crowd of pedestrians, injuring three.

The suspect is not identified. It is noteworthy that counter-terrorism police have been called in to assist in the investigation. This, of course, fits the profile of previous stabbing and vehicle attacks that have been carried out by jihadists in many European countries, including the UK.

*Update (H/T Rair Foundation USA and Vlad Tepes: GB News (UK) is reporting that the suspect is a West African migrant with a history of violence. This has not been officially confirmed.

*Update ( June 15, 2023): The suspect is identified as Valdo Amissão Mendes Calocane.

*Update (June 16). The above suspect is reportedly from the former Portuguese colony of Guinea-Bissau.

France: The Question Persists: Was the Annecy Attacker Really a Christian?

France is still dealing with the horror that occurred in the Alpine town of Annecy (near the Swiss border) this week when a Syrian asylum-seeker went on a rampage and stabbed 6 people in a park, including 4 tiny children. Thus far, there have been no deaths, but some of the children are in serious condition.

What stands out is that the man in question claims to be a Christian, and reportedly yelled, "In the name of Jesus Christ," as he was stabbing 6 people including small children, at least one in a baby stroller.

Christian or Muslim, the act must be condemned. But is it important what his religion was? Yes, it is. Not because some want to affirm that only a Muslim could do such a deed in the name of his religion. Others would like to point out that Muslims are not the only ones to do terrible things in the name of their religion. Lest we forget David Koresh and Jim Jones.

Some would make the case that there is nothing in the New Testament, nor in the words and deeds of Jesus Christ that would tell anyone that they should go on a stabbing rampage and take the lives of toddlers and babies, "in the name of Jesus Christ". On the other hand, the Koran has many passages that advocate violence and murder. "Strike the unbelievers wherever you find them" is just one example. Wherever you find them, be it in a church, an airplane, a park, or a baby stroller?

But I want to emphasize here that one man's act does not condemn all of his co-religionists. Most Muslims have never killed anybody and have no wish to do so. Still, there are troubling teachings within Islam that many (like myself) believe have a direct link to the horrors we see committed routinely by ISIS, Al Qaeda, Boko Haram, Hamas, and others, not to mention individuals who all of a sudden commit murder in the name of jihad.

I want to know what the attacker's religion was because he, in his own words, was acting out of religious motives. It is not that I want to absolve Christianity (my religion) or to paint a target on the backs of innocent Muslims living in France, Europe, or elsewhere. But given what is happening in the world, people have a right to know the motive of such a horrible attack. That enables the public to know exactly what the risk threat is when they go out in public. It is clear that in many parts of Europe, there is a risk of something just like this happening.

Some observers like Robert Spencer and Daniel Greenfield have written that they are skeptical about the attacker's claims to be Christian for a variety of reasons. They point out that many so-called refugees claim to be Christian or even gay in order to further their claim to be persecuted. They also note the obvious Christian name of the suspect pointing out that Christian families do not normally give their children such obvious Christian names in the Middle East because it puts a target on their backs. I greatly respect the opinions of both  Spencer and Greenfield because they are experts on the subject of Islam (and critics as well). So I take their doubts seriously.

In France, the conservative blog, Resistance Republicaine (which is largely dedicated to fighting the increasing Islamization of France) is also expressing doubts. We have translated two articles currently running in the blog, which further cast doubt on the Christian identity of the attacker. (He is identified only as Abdalmasih H.). In the first, written by Messin Issa, the writer asks if French media, who have made contact with the wife of the attacker in Sweden, have simply asked what his religion was as well as her own. It would seem an obvious question to ask. If she confirmed that her husband was, indeed, a Christian, I would have expected this to be widely reported in the French and European media. It seems that it has not. Given the propensity of European police and media to try to obscure the Muslim identities of so many attackers, it is reasonable to suspect that the wife may have told the media that her husband was Muslim and they have chosen not to report it. This, of course, is speculation.

In the second article, RR reports that within Syrian circles in France and Germany, the attacker is known as Selwan Majd, a Muslim. There does not appear to be any substantive link or documentation of this, but it deserves further investigation.

Again, the important point here goes to motive. There appears to be a religious component to the attack. If that is the case, the public deserves to know which religion "motivated" this attack. It is not simply a question of defending or attacking either Christianity or Islam and their respective believers. It is for reasons of public safety. And as I often point out, if it turns out that the attacker was actually a Muslim, that is no justification for committing violent acts of retribution against individual Muslims or their mosques.

Our first translation is in RR and written by the aforementioned Messin Issa, a writer of numerous RR articles, who is of Moroccan (Muslim) background.

Annecy: Is the wife of the attacker a Muslim?

12 June 2023    By Messin Issa- "Tripped up"

It is important to know.

The investigators should look into it. The monster of Annecy met his wife and married her in Turkey. There is thus, a big likelihood that she is Muslim.

Journalists from BFM-TV and AFP contacted the wife of the attacker of babies in Annecy in the hours following the massacre. Did they ask her if her husband was Christian? Surely, they posed the question.

Everyone wanted to know if the attacker was really a Christian as he claimed and as we were led to believe. His ex-wife was well-positioned to know. She had to know if he frequented mosques or churches. She could not have a child with a man whose religion she did not know, real or faked?

Surely they asked the question. But if they made the question disappear and "drowned" (concealed) the answer, there was something disturbing there.

Imagine if the ex-wife had responded: "No, he is not Christian. He is a good Muslim."

We do not know if the wife of the attacker is Muslim. If she is, the attacker, if he is Christian, would have had to convert to Islam to be able to marry her.

A (male) Christian or a (female) Christian can only marry a Muslim (male or female) if he or she converts to Islam.

That is the rule in all Muslim countries.

In 1981, I returned to Morocco with my wife (whom) I brought from the Soviet Union, where I did my studies. She had to convert to Islam so that our marriage would be recognized in Morocco. Ah! A small formality, handled with a small bribe.

In the Kingdom of the Commander of the Faithful (Saudi Arabia?)*, the acquisition of faith costs no more or less than a half kilo of meat......

The Lebanese Christian Omar Sharif also did it to marry the Egyptian Muslim, Faten Hamama.

Turkey is no exception to this rule.

It would not be surprising if, on becoming a Muslim, the husband, originally Christian, found himself "unbalanced". This is entirely normal.

Unbalanced (people) are a common product in France and in Europe. A common product on the streets, in the schools, the parks, the train stations, public transport.....

We would also want to know the name of their daughter. Surely, a Muslim name.

But neither BFM-TV nor AFP, nor the investigators, nor the national prosecutors will tell us.

We understand them.

Their motto is, "Sleep well, French people. Nothing bad will happen to you if you close your eyes, your ears, and your mouth".

And the French people, especially the official media, close them.

-Messin Issa

*Correction: This is a reference to Morocco, not Saudi Arabia.

The second translation is an article by RR editor, Christine Tasin, in which she brings up the name Selwan Majd.

https://resistancerepublicaine.com/2023/06/12/le-terroriste-dannecy-serait-un-syrien-musulman-nomme-selwan-majd/

The Annecy terrorist is reportedly a Syrian Muslim named Selwan Majd....

12 June 2023 Christine Tasin    Jihad

Here is what is circulating among the Syrians living in France and Germany who reportedly have recognized the madman of Allah. And this is reportedly confirmed by the relatives of Father Boulad of Alexandria...

Continued.

From the beginning, we have been saying that it cannot be a Christian....and that it is (the work of) a Muslim.....

The assailant is reportedly a Syrian refugee named Selwan Majd.....

He has claimed to be named Abd El-Messih Hanoun, but his true name is Selwan Majd, a refugee from Al-Hasakah in northern Syria.

He showed up in Turkey with false papers where he met a Swedish tourist and led her to believe that he was Muslim converted to Christianity.

He married her in Sweden under the false Christian name, but Swedish authorities doubted him and refused to grant him citizenship, later his wife separated from him.

In France, he went searching for help in a church, but the church also doubted him.

He carried out his crime wearing a cross, claiming that he was Christian in order to hide his terrorist genes.

Unfortunately, European authorities have acquired a lot of false information recorded either by the refugees themselves or by Turkish authorities.

Thousands of people have infiltrated into European countries and have become sleeper cells.

Another Embarrassment at Berkeley: Chesa Boudin Named to Law School Post

Chesa Boudin, the disgraced (and recalled) former DA of San Francisco, has been named to head up the  Berkeley School of Law's new Criminal Law Justice Center. Law School Dean Erwin Chemerinsky is calling Boudin "eminently qualified" for the post.

Put another way, Boudin's selection proves there is a lid for every pot.

The campus paper, The Daily Californian, has the big news.

-Daily Californian

No doubt, Boudin's selection will add one more misfit to the university's faculty. Boudin's vision of the law is that nobody should be in jail, which I suppose is also the vision of the UC Berkeley Law School.

NY Times Downplays CUNY Commencement Debacle

Hat tip Algemeiner

I am cross-posting an article in Algemeiner, a New York-based Jewish publication regarding the recent debacle at the City University of New York Law School graduation ceremony, in which a young lady from "the rich soil" of Yemen (her words, not mine), Fatima Mousa Mohammed, gave a commencement address that can only be termed, anti-American, anti-Israeli, anti-white, and anti-Semitic on its face. We have previously reported on this disgraceful speech.

But predictably, the New York Times, supposedly America's "flagship" newspaper, but in reality, nothing more than a liberal mouthpiece for the Democrat party, chose to downplay the speech (which took place in their own city). It is specifically, an op-ed by columnist Ginia Bellafante that has stirred outrage.

This is the newspaper that refused to publish reports of the systematic murder of Jews in Europe during World War 2.

Italy: Migrants Hijack Boat

Ship hijacked by migrants. Intervention by "Leatherheads"" Dramatic moments

10 June 2023

Arrival by helicopter on the ship hijacked by migrants, then the raid in the interior of the Galata Seaways. Here are the images of the intervention by the "Leatherheads", who freed the hull in Naples, which (one of the cases under investigation) a group of illegals-some armed with knives-wanted to hijack. Three migrants were reported on the loose carrying weapons as part of the investigations as to what happened on board the Turkish ship in which Italian Special Forces intervened after an SOS sent out from the commander. In all, 15 migrants were found on board the ship and were disembarked at Naples, three of whom were treated at the Hospital of the Sea, two for mild illnesses, and one for hypothermia. Police and (Guardia di) Finanza (Finance Police) are investigating, under the coordination of the Naples Proscutor's Office, to determine what happened on board and to clarify the positions of the migrants. During the night in police hqs, the 15 migrants and the captain of the ship were questioned. The news became public when the defense minister, Guido Crisetto, announced the raid in progress during the interview with Bruno Vespa in Forum in Masseria Manduria.

Horrific Knife Attack on Children in France

The attacker
-France Bleu

Today in Annecy (French Alps), France, a man identified as a Syrian asylum-seeker went on a stabbing rampage in a park. He stabbed 5-6 children, mostly ages 2-3 years, before being tackled by police. The man reportedly was yelling, "In the name of Jesus Christ!" and claimed to be a Syrian Christian. Four of the victims are said to be in critical condition.

This man reportedly holds asylum status in Sweden but was rejected in France. More details are pending, and we will try to translate something today from French sources.

Whatever this man's religion and/or motive is,  if this event doesn't bring a dramatic change to Europe's insane asylum policies, nothing will.

Father of a child, married, refugee in Sweden....Who is Abdalmasih H., the Syrian arrested in Annecy?

By Guillaume Poingt
Posted 9 hours ago, updated 2 hours ago

The man born in October 1991 is suspected of having injured 6, 4 of whom are young children. He claims to "be a Christian from Syria". He was arrested by police a few minutes after the attack.

The man arrested after having injured 6 persons, of whom 4 are children, in a park in Annecy (Haute Savoie), Thursday June 8, is a Syrian age 31, who entered France legally.

The individual, named Abdalmasih H., had requested asylum at the Office of Protection of Refugees and Stateless Persons (Ofpra) on November 28, 2022 in a normal procedure, according to a source close to the investigation.

But he had already received refugee status in Sweden, where he had been living since 2013, prior to his request in France. According to our information, Abdalmasih H. had declared himself as a Christian from Syria in his asylum request file and had a Christian cross on him at the time of his arrest. The Syrian was also married to a Swede and had a three-year-old child with her, a source tells us.

Lived ten years in Sweden

According to the Swedish daily, Aftonbladet, he reportedly applied for Swedish nationality in 2017 and 2022. These requests were reportedly unsuccessful. He reportedly lived for ten years in the town of Trollhättan in the southwest of the country. According to the Foreign Affairs Ministry of Sweden, the man reportedly had "an ordinary life", and reportedly even studied English and Swedish in order to integrate himself. However, he was convicted in 2022 for state financial aid fraud. Officially, Abdalmasih H. is still registered as a resident of the Scandinavian country with his 26-year-old wife.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
*Update: June 8, 5:40 PST: At this point, the number of injured is 6- 2 adults and 4 children. Among the children are a British child and a Dutch child. There are 4 countries in Europe directly impacted by this shocking event: France, Sweden, the Netherlands, and the UK. Hopefully, this latest atrocity will finally shock these nations-and the rest of Europe- to bring a halt to their asylum policy.

Belgium: Wedding Molenbeek Style

Molenbeek (Brussels)

The Brussels district of Molenbeek is considered a hub of Islamic radicalism. It was this neighborhood that spawned the horrific Islamic terrorist attacks in Paris and Brussels in 2015 and 2016 respectively. But that doesn't mean that all the news out of Molenbeek is bad. The good news is that there was a Syrian wedding party in Molenbeek on Tuesday night.

Now for the bad news. The party took a turn for the worse when a shooting occurred in which one celebrant was shot in the leg. In addition, a knife fight also broke out with one combatant getting stabbed in the back.

The below article from the Dutch-language Belgian daily, Nieuwsblad, is translated by Fousesquawk.

Syrian wedding party in Molenbeek gets out of control: Two seriously wounded in shooting and knife fight.

The events took place in the Salle (Hall) Excellence in Molenbeek

A Syrian wedding on Tuesday evening in Molenbeek got entirely out of hand. Two people were injured: One of them by a bullet in the leg and the second by a stab in the back.

Dirk Coosemans

The events played out around 23:30 at Mariemontkaal in Molenbeek. In the banquet hall, a Syrian wedding party was in progress when a big argument broke out, which ended in a shooting and a knife fight. "According to the initial results of the investigation, two men were injured. One of them got a knife in the back, the other a bullet in the leg," the Brussels Prosecutor's Office confirmed.

The reason for the argument is, at this moment, not known. Though the two victims were transported with serious injuries, they are not reported to be life-threatening. The Prosecutor's Office has begun an investigation, but as yet, nobody is under arrest.
