On Friday, October 9, Vlaams Belang party leader Filip DeWinter and Anke Van demeerisch were involved in a scuffle with people in a Belgian-Moroccan wedding group outside Antwerp City Hall. There are competing versions of how the scuffle started, but there is a partial video showing a burly guy shoving the elderly Dewinter into a wall at City Hall. Vlaams Belang is a conservative Flemish party in Belgium that opposes mass migration.

The article below from HLN shows both versions as well as the aforementioned video clip.

Filip Dewinter and Anke Van dermeersch in a quarrel with Belgian-Moroccan family at Antwerp City Hall

A fight took place Friday on the Grand Market Place  between Vlaams Belang politicians Filip Dewinter and Anke Van dermeersch and a Belgian-Moroccan family that was present for a wedding party. According to people who were present at the scene, the incident began after Van dermeersch reportedly filmed the party. Dewinter himself told a different story. Dewinter and Van dermeersch were- in contrast to our earlier report-not arrested.

The family says that the argument took place on the Grand Market in Antwerp while they were present for a wedding party. "Anke Vandermeersch wanted to film us, but we did not want that. So there was an argument, and suddenly, things got completely out of hand. She (Van dermeersch) wound up hitting the mother of the bride."

Felip Dewinter arrived at City Hall shortly afterwards for a meeting and clashed with the family.

"Chased and beaten"

I didn't have my entry badge with me and that's why I had to use the main entrance. I also wanted to sign the funeral register for Stranger John, says Dewinter. "I was recognized by one of the people, and he followed me to the stairs. It was a burly guy, and he gave me some hard blows. My eyebrow was bloodied. As far as my colleague, Anke Vandermeersch is concerned, she didn't hit anybody.  She only filmed. I will soon disseminate the film clips."

Van dermeersch also reacted to the incident. In her account, she was in the City Hall because she had entered through the side entrance when she noticed the tumult. Above all, she disputes the accusation that she attacked the mother of the bride.

"The camera images inside City Hall captured everything and should bring absolute clarity," Van dermeersch states.  There, it will be seen that I only began filming when Filip was attacked. I focused on nobody and did not provoke anyone. I expect that the police will fully investigate the camera images so that true objective circumstances can be determined."

Rapid Response Team

What the reason for the quarrel was and whether there will be an official complaint filed is not yet clear. The police sent a Rapid Response Team (SRT) to the scene to restore calm.

"Shortly before 12 o'clock, on the Grand Market, there was a confrontation between Filip Dewinter and Anke Van dermeersch, on the one hand, and people attending a wedding, on the other hand," said Kim Bastiaens, from the Antwerp police. When Filip Dewinter passed through the crowd to go to the City Hall, there was some pushing and pulling. Anke Van dermeersch then also moved among the crowd, and there was also some pushing and shoving with a woman."

The police came to the scene and were able to detain two people from the family. Filip Dewinter was slightly injured in the head.
