Austria: Teenagers Disrupt Church Service With "Allahu Akhbar"

On Tuesday evening, in Vienna, a church mass was disrupted by at least 2 teenagers who repeatedly shouted, "Allahu Akhbar" before disappearing into the night. The priest called it "youthful exuberance". He also expressed his irritation that his parish has been very active in assisting Muslim refugee families in the area. He has since been told by colleagues in other parishes that they have been experiencing similar incidents. He related that he did not call the police, explaining, "What good would that do?"

I can see his point, but in a few years, those same youths may be returning to his church with guns, knives, or bombs. Such is their gratitude for the help that church has provided to their families. I also take note that the priest does not want his church identified for security reasons. Of course. He is now afraid. With good reason. Youthful exuberance, indeed.

"Yee gads!"

On Tuesday evening, an unusual incident occurred in a parish church in western Vienna, as reported by The Press. Several teenagers disrupted an ongoing religious service, in which they loudly shouted, "Allahu Akhbar" ("God is Great"). The priest in question expressed his concern over the action.

Teenagers disrupt religious service

As the priest described to The Press, during the mass, he initially heard laughter and noise. Shortly thereafter, there were shouts of "Allahu Akhbar" from the direction of the entrance of the church.  This apparently came from several teenagers standing at the church threshold.

The priest estimates the ages of the teenagers at about 14-15 years. After a short time, they disappeared. "I have never experienced such a thing. And I have been here 20 years, " the priest said, surprised.  He does not wish to publicize the exact location of the church for security reasons.

"It was probably youthful exuberance"

In spite of the disturbance, the priest does not want to dramatize the incident. There was no concrete threat. "There was no concrete threat. I want to make that clear. It was probably youthful exuberance," he explained. The priest also filed no police report. "What good would that do?" he asked.

He is especially irritated that his parish has supported Muslim refugees for years. Since 2015, the community has helped in finding housing, dealing with the authorities, and with German language courses. He also has a good relationship with Muslim families in the surrounding area.

Similar incidents (occur) regularly

After the incident, the priest spoke with a colleague from another Vienna district. This (colleague) told him that similar disruptions are now regularly occurring in his parish.

The priest is especially concerned over the question of from where the teenagers are getting their attitudes. He supposes the influences come from the family environment, the school, or from social media.

Austrian People's Party National Council Deputy Gudrun Kugler has already reacted: "Whoever deliberately disrupts a church service and intimidates worshippers, as two teenagers did in a Vienna church on Tuesday evening, has crossed a clear line. In Austria, every person must be able to practice their religion freely and undisturbed. That goes for every religion in every place. The respect for our fundamental values is not a question of personal opinion, but rather a given that we expect from everyone."
