The confessed perpetrator of the femicide of Paula Solanas (27), whom he allegedly murdered last Friday in their apartment on Calle Perines in Santander because she had decided to break off the relationship, yesterday exercised his right to remain silent during questioning by the National Police/

 Yesterday, sources close to the investigation told El Diario Montañés that investigators decided to take a statement from the detainee of Moroccan nationality, 39, on Sunday morning, for which they required the presence of a defense attorney.

Once he received the assistance of his lawyer, the alleged murderer decided to remain silent before the officers, making use of one of the rights that all those under investigation have: not to have to tell the truth, among others.

 On Monday morning, the detainee will appear before Magistrate Fernando Vegas, head of Court #1 of the Violence Against Women section of Santander, according to judicial authorities. The preliminary detention period of 72 hours maximum (3 calendar days) expires today at noon.

It remains to be seen if, before Magistrate Vegas, the alleged murderer decides to give a statement and explain the motive why he wound up taking the life of the mother of his son, of less than 1 year of age, with whom he had a sentimental relationship over 4 years which ended recently, which the father of the victim related the same day as the incident to El Diario Montañés.

 In any case, what is expected is that the investigating judge in this case will agree to provisional custody of the detainee, without bail, given the seriousness of the act and the possible risk of flight that there would be in case of letting him out.

The fact that he confessed to the crime at the first moment- he was also the one who alerted the police to what happened- will surely facilitate the police and judicial investigation, although the Scientific Police must carry out a series of searches at the location of the crime to collect all types of evidence, including the weapon with which the detainee allegedly stabbed his partner of 4 years.

What has emerged for the moment through the information provided last Friday by government authorities in Cantabria is that when police officers arrived at the residence where the incident occurred, they found Paula Solanas inside with "bloody wounds" (it is not known how many), possibly caused by a bladed weapon.

Faced with this, the police requested the urgent presence of paramedics, who, upon arriving at the scene, could only confirm the death of the woman. At the same location, National Police officers proceeded to arrest the partner of the victim, who confessed to being the perpetrator of the crime.

One of the neighbors who witnessed the police intervention on Friday told this newspaper that they had heard the words of one of the officers minutes after his arrival at the scene of the crime. "They said something like it was shocking and they didn't remember seeing anything like it for a long time."
