Wacko College Courses (4)

We begin episode 4 with news from the University of Oklahoma, where a student was given a failing grade of 0 out of a possible 25 points by a teaching assistant for a reaction essay she wrote on gender norms in a "Lifespan and Development" class. Apparently, the student's Christian beliefs got in the way of writing a politically correct reaction. Fox News has the report here.

Then it's off to where else-UC Berkeley, where the campus is facing an URGENT crisis in...........

ANTI-FATNESS!

And apparently, there is an INTERSECTION with anti-black racism.

A task force-task force, mind you- has been formed to tackle the urgent problem. Campus Reform has the report here.

“Body Diversity and Weight Inclusion Work Group,”

"The university reiterates its “commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion” on a page titled “Body Diversity & Weight Inclusion,” but finds that “anti-fatness, rooted in the same systems of oppression as anti-Black racism, remains a largely unaddressed issue.”

There's more to this story that right-wing media isn't reporting.

If she did indeed receive a failing grade because of her opinion on an opinion essay, then yes, that would be ridiculous.

The problem is, if you read the actual reasons behind the grade, she didn't fulfill the requirements of the assignment.

The instructor's response was that the assignment "does not answer the questions for the assignment, contradicts itself, heavily uses personal ideology over empirical evidence in a scientific class, and is at times offensive..."

They probably should have left out the part about it being offensive, as the other reasons are enough to receive a failing grade.

As someone who regularly grades opinion essays, I take this very seriously. I have given good grades to students who disagreed with me and bad grades to students who agree. Ultimately, they just need to show that they're following instructions. (And both those who agree and disagree with me fail to do so.)

This young lady is pulling a grift. It's an obvious setup to get attention for herself - and it's working. She'll probably have a podcast or be a speaker at the next Republican rally. If she makes a lot of money off of this, she should give the professor a commission.

Just found this, so you can truly judge for yourself. Both the article and assignment are posted in full, along with Fulnecky's response.

Of course, the blogger writes a lot of commentary, but you can skip all of that and just read what she wrote in her paper.

An update on the story in Oklahoma. The Oklahoma Federation of College Republicans have called out the student and defended the teacher.

From what I read, this student normally received A's on her previous papers. This reaffirms my suspicion that this whole situation is a grift. If that's true, she clearly knows how to properly write a paper. It seems an interesting coincidence that she writes an anti-transgender rant (calling people "demonic") instead of following the assignment when a transgender person was going to grade it. And then her first reaction is to call the governor?

It all feels very pre-planned. I'm glad that there are some level-headed Republicans who have seen through this and are putting out the word as to what actually happened.
