Last Monday (June 16), a 68-year-old man was stabbed outside an asylum center in the Thuringian town of Apolda. He is in critical condition. His attacker, allegedly a 21-year-old asylum seeker, who is reportedly a Turkish citizen, turned himself over to police and is in custody. It has been reported by various sources that the Turkish government has refused to issue the man a passport (which he does not possess).
The incident has reminded Apolda of the case of Tarik J., a Moroccan citizen who was residing in the area since 2014, was arrested for numerous crimes, and was ordered deported in 2017. Morocco had initially refused to issue him a passport, and it took until 2024 before this man was deported back to his country.

He stabbed and seriously injured a pensioner in front of the asylum center. Now, new details are known on the knife attack in Apolda. According to information from Thuringer Allgemeine, the perpetrator had long been considered dangerous, but he could not be deported.
On Monday morning, a 21-year-old resident of the refugee center on Lessingstrasse in Apolda stabbed a 68-year-old passerby in front of the asylum center. The man, who was once an office manager in the district administrative office of the city, remains in a life-threatening condition. The circumstances of the knife attack are still not completely clear. As the Thuringer Allgemeine further reports, the former office head was on his way to the district archives office, where he occasionally worked even as a pensioner.
The perpetrator surrendered himself to police shortly after the attack. An arrest warrant was issued against him for attempted manslaughter with serious bodily injury. According to research by the Thuringer Allgemeine, he is reportedly a Turkish citizen but does not possess a valid passport. That's why he could not be deported.
The district administrative office reported the 21-year-old as being dangerous a year ago. He is reportedly under investigation for property damage.
