The Orange County (Ca) DA's Office has filed misdemeanor charges against four UC Irvine students and two UC Irvine professors in connection with their arrests on campus as police were dispersing the pro-Palestinian encampment in May. Additional charges against others may be in the works.
This is a welcome development. Without knowing the details of the individual arrests, I believe that arrests and prosecutions are long overdue for campus protests that go beyond the right to demonstrate. Setting up encampments, disrupting the operation of a campus, refusing police orders to disperse, intimidating others, and resisting arrest are not covered under the First Amendment (no matter what CAIR says). In Orange County, we are fortunate to have a real prosecutor, Todd Spitzer, who believes in enforcing the law.
*Update: September 25, 2024. Here is how the campus newspaper, New University, is reporting the matter.
