Sweden: Israeli Flag Burned in Front of Malmö Synagogue

Malmö synagogue

-Opindia

On Saturday, about ten protesters gathered in front of Malmö 's only synagogue and burned an Israeli flag while chanting in English, "Free free Palestine" and "Bomb Israel".

The English-language site, Opindia, has a video. We are also translating a partial article on the incident from the local Malmö newspaper, Sydsvenskan. Unfortunately, the rest of the article is subject to a subscriber firewall, but the basic facts are there.

It may seem minor in light of everything else that is going on around the world, but the symbolism of this act is striking. For years now, Sweden's third-largest city, once a haven for Danish Jews fleeing Nazi occupation, has become a dangerous place for the dwindling Jewish community. The city is home to a large concentration of Muslim immigrants, and anti-Semitism in the city is rampant.

It is one thing to demonstrate in front of the Israeli embassy or consulate, but why in front of a synagogue? Are Jews protesting  the actions of Hamas in front of mosques anywhere in the world? Perhaps somewhere, but I have no such knowledge.

No, this is part of the worldwide war against the Jewish people, and we Christians need to stand with our Jewish fellow-citizens, brothers and sisters whether it be in Sweden, Israel, the US, or wherever.

From the Opindia article, below is our translation of what the chairman of the Jewish Council,  Aaron Verständig, had to say as he posted the video on X.

"What you see is a demonstration against Israel at the Malmö  synagogue just now. It is disgusting how the Jewish congregation in Malmö is once again attacked by Islamists. It is important to clearly condemn this."

Here is our translation of the introduction to the Sydsvenskan article.
