The death toll has now reportedly reached 20,000, and the scenes are unimaginable. Whatever political differences we may have with Turkey or Syria, it is heartbreaking what is happening there. The international community is responding admirably.
I have never been to Syria, but I have visited Turkey twice and enjoyed my time there. I can only hope that in the face of this tragedy, President Erdogan revises his attitude towards countries like the West (especially Sweden) and Israel. (Both nations are sending aid.) If there is a silver lining to all this, perhaps, just perhaps, it will lead to an improvement in international relations.
