White Savior Complex, BIPOCs, and Laboratory "Racism"

Hat tip The College Fix

One of the most fascinating aspects of the English language is how its vocabulary continues to grow over time. In recent years, the crazies in academia have played a leading role in expanding our language with new terms like, "triggering", "micro-aggressions", "macro-aggressions", "white privilege", "Latinx", and many others.

Reading this article from The College Fix, I have learned four new terms I had never heard of. That's because professors from DePaul and UC Merced have written a paper decrying racism in laboratories. In their paper, they introduce the terms, "BIPOC" (Black, Indigenous, People of Color), "tone policing", "folx", and "white savior complex".

“Unfortunately, both overt and covert racist incidents (e.g., microaggressions, tokenism, white savior complex, tone policing, etc.) routinely occur in science labs and go unreported,” the authors said in its suggestion of how to lead informed discussions."

At the risk of nit-picking, I always thought that the word, "folks" was non-gender specific as it denotes neither male or female in the plural. But what do I know?

I guess I just need to go back to college for a refresher course.
