Michael Drake to be Next UC President

The University of California Board of Regents has voted to appoint Michael Drake as its next UC president, succeeding Janet Napolitano.

Drake, a physician by trade, was previously the president of Ohio State University and before that the chancellor of UC Irvine during many of the years I taught part time there.

I never met Dr Drake, and by all accounts that I have heard, he is a gentleman and a decent man. During the last years of his tenure, I was critical of him because I felt (and still do) that UC Irvine has not confronted the problem of anti-Semitism on campus. (That includes his successor at UC Irvine.) I do not have any reason whatsoever  to believe Mr Drake is anti-Semitic himself, but I just felt he didn't do enough to confront the issue. I have that same criticism for many university presidents and chancellors. It's just the campus culture.

I also feel that Mr Drake will be an improvement over Janet Napolitano, who, in my view, was incompetent and politically driven by her liberal agenda. But then again, there are so many like her.

I wish Dr Drake well in his next position. There is much to do in the UC system, and I will be watching.
