"The Captain From Kiel"

Hat tip Vlad Tepes and Gates of Vienna

"Heigh ho, heigh ho
It's off to jail I go"

Carola Rackete, a German ship captain from Kiel who works for the German NGO, Sea Watch, has made headlines all over Europe by disobeying orders from the Italian Coast Guard and sailing her ship into Italian waters off the coast of Lampedusa, Sicily with 42 African migrants on board. She has now been arrested by Italian police, and the ship still sits off Lampedusa.

Not only is the ship operated by a German NGO, it is flying a Dutch flag. Yet, the German and Dutch governments refuse to take responsibility for the migrants.

As for the "Captain from Kiel" (not to be confused with the Captain and Tennille), she is finding widespread support not only from the EU, but from German media itself. Vlad Tepes has posted a German news report (NDR) that would make MSNBC proud (translation Miss Piggy).

This week, we also posted a televised statement by Italian Interior Minister Matteo Salvini, who very capably explained why Italy should not be expected to be burdened with all these refugees coming across the Mediterranean. Together with Vlad Tepes and Gates of Vienna, we are translating another video of Salvini explaining his case to a TV moderator.

* Update: It can be Accessed here.

As for the Captain from Kiel, here's hoping Italy makes an example of her and gives her about 5 years to think about Italy's territorial integrity.
