History Alive Textbooks: What Happened to Aisha?

Hardcover History Alive! : The Medieval World and Beyond Book

History Alive textbooks by the Teachers Curriculum Institute has for years been the subject of parents 'complaints due to the sugar coated presentation of Islam it gives students in the 6th and 7th grades. Islam is presented almost the point of proselytizing. Interestingly, the current book (The Medieval World and Beyond) talks about Mohammad's marriages without mentioning his most prominent wife, Aisha. Mohammad was betrothed to Aisha when she was six and the marriage was consummated when she was 9.

Muhammad was still a young man when he began managing caravans for a widow named Khadijah, who ran a trading business. Muhammad earned her great profits. Impressed with his abilities and honesty, Khadijah proposed marriage. Muhammad accepted her offer, and when he was about 25, they married. Muhammad and Khadijah had several children, but only their daughter Fatima had children of her own. She continued the bloodline of Muhammad.

The issue of this marriage is a topic of controversy today, something that critics of Islam and Mohammad often point out. To be accurate, the practice of child brides was common in that era in the Arabian peninsula. Yet, while it is outlawed in the West, it is still often practiced in many parts of the Islamic world, like Afghanistan. In places like Iran, a female is considered an adult when she turns nine. After all, as many believe, if Mohammad could do it, we can do it now.

All of which TCI decided to leave out.
