The below interview of the sheikh of Al Azhar University (Cairo), Ahmad al-Yayyeb, is telling. In this clip, he explains that with small exceptions, the main authorities in Islamic law agree that apostates from Islam have committed and crime and that the punishment is death. He does point out that the Hanafi school makes an exception for women because "it is inconceivable that a woman would rebel against her community". Keep in mind that Al Azhar University is the number one Islamic university in the world.
