“In just a few days, our students will return to the classrooms. They will expect an engaged faculty and will want new classes addressing contemporary social and political issues,” he writes. “At times, too, they will be hoping for some kind genuflection to their humanity, their youth and the dark, merciless world in which we live.”
In recent days we reported that the University of Chicago has sent out a notice to their incoming freshmen that the university will not be setting aside "safe spaces" to shield them from what they may consider offensive speech. Naturally, academics across the fruited plain have risen up to protest. One of the silliest protestations comes from Professor Matthrew Guterl of Brown University. Campus Report has the details.

I got news for the Learned Professor: When those cupcakes graduate and step into the dark, merciless world out there, there will be no safe spaces, no trigger warnings. nothing to protect them except their own abilities. Universities are supposed to educate and prepare them for the real world. This is one reason why they are failing. They are being taught by professors like Matthew Guterl.

Genuflection is for Roman Catholics. If there's one thing I can't stand, its a would-be Marxist who hasn't read any history and doesn't understand what Malcolm X learned reading a good dictionary. (Even hear a Malcolm X speech? The King' English, flawless diction. Not to mention he went fearlessly into some unsafe spaces. And no, he wasn't a Marxist either.)
