What could be more symbolic in the wake of today's Brussels bombings? The Pope, an Argentinian who has moved to Rome and who is lecturing the Europeans on the need to admit more refugees, will wash the feet of some migrants. In the Catholic tradition, this is a symbolic act in imitation of what Jesus did. In my opinion, in the present time, this is a symbolic disaster.

You are aware Gary, that Argentina had an election recently, and dumped the Kirchner dynasty from power? Our President wanted to make a point of backing the new administration. Don't you think that is a good idea? As I recall, you had a few pithy remarks to make about Mrs. Kirchner from time to time.
Fine and dandy, Siarlys, but then Obama goes and apologizes for the US because Argentina had a "dirty war". We didn't speak out against it enough. Our CIA may have given information to the Argentine junta etc.
Whatever happened in Argentina is for the Argentines to sort out. They were the ones killing each other.
While I am not an expert on the subject, my visit to Argentina in 1985 was in the very first week of the new democratically elected government.
It is true, the U.S. financed the dirty war, advocated and instigated the dirty war. That was par for the course between the U.S. intelligence services and the Latin American military. We only pulled back after the generals had the temerity to fight a war with the declining power known as Great Britain. A modest apology never hurts. Of course 99 percent of the American people had nothing to do with the dirty war, or, for that matter, the lie that we had to go into Iraq to find Hussein al-Takriti's weapons of mass destruction.
