Marquette University is determined to fire professor John McAdams, who is a conservative. This saga has been going on a long time-as most sagas in universities do because administrators usually can't figure out what to do from day to day in contested matters. Professor McAdams is not the most pleasant or rational guy in the world, but I am philosophically opposed to mandated or coerced apologies, not least because they are utterly hypocritical. My own response is "If I'm sorry, I'll say so. If I don't, I'm probably not." Thus, I support Prof. McAdams as far as this point goes.
I also think he had a perfectly valid critique of the way the TA treated the student in her class. McAdams has told the local press that he might have handled his blog post differently if he had known the kind of nasty emails the TA would get as a result -- that wasn't his intent.
