"He wanted to bring fire and blood to Brussels"
"This Frenchman suspected of having committed the killing at the Jewish Museum in Brussels knew the capital, where he had connections. He claimed the acts in a video seized from him."
That is a quote attributed to the accused Brussels shooter, Mehdi Nemmouche after he was arrested by French police in Marseilles where he was apparently en route to Algeria via bus. The comment was reportedly made on a video seized from him. The below report (in French) is from the French-language daily Le Soir contains press conferences in France and Belgium. Nemmouche was found to be in possession of a Kalashnikov weapon (with ammo) wrapped in a cloth containing the name of the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant, a handgun, a shirt similar to that worn by the Brussels shooter, a Go-Pro camera and a 40 second video showing his weapons and in which the narrator claimed responsibility for the attack and stating that the Go-Pro camera he was using at the attack did not function. The camera was transferred to the federal police in Marseilles for examination. The suspect has also been transferred to federal police custody. He has refused to make any statements since his arrest according to the article. According to a statement by a Belgian spokesman in one of the videotaped press conferences (linked), the aforementioned video seized from Nemmouche contained the admission that he "had committed the attack and wanted to bring fire and blood to Brussels".
The report further states that a search is being conducted at the suspect's home in Courtrai, Northern France (apparently the residences of his grandmother and aunts since he himself has no known address in France), and that he was familiar with Brussels where he was known to have contacts. Nemmouche has a criminal record in France, convictions for aggravated theft, a stick-up of a store, and auto theft involving vehicles that were delivered to Brussels. He has served 5 years in prison. At the time of his arrest in Marseilles, he was on a bus that had traveled from Amsterdam and Brussels. Customs Police often check the bus line as it is a known conduit for drug couriers. Police are saying his arrest was "by chance".
It is believed Nemmouche was in Brussels four days. It is also believed he had previously traveled from France to Turkey in January 2013 where he is suspected of having joined a jihadist group. He is believed to have returned to France in January 2014.
The below report also includes excerpts from press conferences in France and Belgium as well as an interview with Nemmouche's former attorney who reads from his court records. This includes the statement by the Belgian spokesman (with white background) about Nemmouche's admission. (There is more than one clip of each spokesman.) In another clip, the same Belgian spokesman says that Nemmouche boarded the aforementioned bus in Brussels on May 29.
