UC Berkeley Professor's Outrageous Charge of Racism Over Hurricane Katrina

Hat tip Campus Reform

This is sickening on two fronts: First, there was a "white privilege" conference in Madison, Wisconsin. If you are wondering what white privilege is, this is the latest academic buzz phrase to throw out when you can't actually accuse white people of discriminating and being racist. It is like saying Climate Change when you can't prove Global Warming.

Secondly, a law professor at UC Berkeley was there, a guy named John Powell. He used the conference as a soap box to accuse the Bush administration of racism over Hurricane Katrina. His presentation was taped by an audience member.

Of course, this is pretty much what you would expect from a UC Berkeley professor. It is false. It is unfair, and it is an embarrassment for the university that employs him when such a thing is said. What if I said that the reason that the Obama administration engaged in Operation Fast and Furious, which has led to the deaths of hundreds of Mexicans, was because they were racist against Mexicans? As much as I have condemned Fast and Furious, I have never used that argument.

And Fast and Furious was no hurricane.

The only legitimate "white privilege" argument is that "white" skin is implicitly assumed to be the norm, while anything else is "something different."

Who was it who yelled "Don't call me Norm"? Now that was a renunciation of "white privilege."

But as I always say, "Ain't nobody white except lepers and albinos." (II Kings 5:27).

Hurricane Katrina probably did hit black Americans harder than others, because they had on average homes more likely to collapse, located in lower flood plains, had less money to rebuild with, etc. etc. etc. It doesn't take flying a bunch of speakers to Madison to make that point. We don't need loony Berkeley professors in Madison, we have Scott Walker, and he's bad enough.

(Go ahead Gary, unwind that one.)
