Have you noticed that Hindu families do this for caste and "honor" reasons and, like this case in Pakistan, its usually all about extracting money from the woman's family, or killing her if there is no more to be had?
This stuff has been part of the culture in south Asia since before Alexander the Great grabbed a wife in what is now Afghanistan...
