Ayaan Hirsi Ali and the Backlash

Robert Fulford, writing in the National Post (Canada) has an interesting take on the recent backlash against Ayaan Hirsi Ali

I suppose that for Ali, the backlash of the liberal West is small potatoes compared to the death threats she gets from the Islamists. I do find it interesting the part in the above article that refers to the comments of Lila Abu-Lughod, who argues that Muslim women hardly need saving from the West.

This is similar to the comments I heard from Loubna Qutami at UC Irvine a couple of weeks back, when she criticized the efforts of liberal Westerners to "save" Muslim women-this after showing a film showing the gender abuse of women in Gaza (Duna). As a Palestinian-American, she was much more interested in delegitimizing Israel than the former issue. To be sure, she blamed the gender abuse in Arab communities on the Israelis and the West for their "settler occupation colonialism" and "neo-colonialism" respectively. (That's what advanced college degrees teach you.)

Sorry, but I have to go with Ali on this issue. There may not be much we can do for the women of Gaza, but when they live in our countries, that is a different story. She represents Muslim immigrant women who are not enjoying the full rights and protections that free Western societies are supposed to offer to all-including Muslim immigrant women. If we take the position that religion and old tribal customs from the old countries must take precedence over our own laws, soon we will all lose those protections.
