Here is a story that is all too common coming out of this part of the world. It seems that in Pakistan, rape is considered (at least by men) to be on a par with speeding in Mexico. It can be settled pretty easily. Here is an outrageous story concerning what happens to one young rape victim when police "settle" the case out of court.

I want to say this carefully so as not to be misunderstood. I consider rape to be a very heinous crime. Working on a college campus, one of the issues that gets a lot of attention is sexual assault. Many of the cases of sexual assault on campus (which includes dorms and frat houses) involves heavy drinking and date rape drugs in which the female victim becomes incapacitated and taken advantage of by men. Without trivializing those cases in any way, I would like to see more outrage from our feminists here in the West in regards to cases like this in Pakistan.
"But," you say, "we have to focus our attention on what happens here in our country. We can't control what happens in other parts of the world. Why should we spend time and energy on rapes overseas?
To that I say, "Why are you spending so much time and energy on Israel and the Palestinians?"
Maybe we should keep that in mind the next time we see some student or professor from Pakistan preaching to us about the sins of Israel or the US.

I am fully aware of the Judge Baugh case. I condemned it when it was brought to my attention by an anonymous commentor here (perhaps you) and I condemn it now. I thought I had even posted on it but apparently not since I can't find it. At any rate, Baugh should be removed from the bench.
I had a rare moment of TV watching last month, and saw a documentary on a Pakistani-born plastic surgeon with a lucrative practice in the USA who volunteers a good deal of time doing restorative surgery on women who have been set on fire or had acid thrown in their face by vengeful husbands or spiteful mothers-in-law. It seems that a law was passed unanimously by the Pakistani parliament to impose a mandatory life sentence without parole for such crimes, and the husband of one of his patients was actually convicted and sentenced under it. So its not all bad news over there.
Incidentally, treatment of women in Hindu India is about on a par with treatment of women in Muslim Pakistan. Its centuries deep in the culture of the region, regardless of religion.
As is the case here in the U.S., all the laws in the world (Obamacare, drugs, guns, et al) don't mean much if they are not meaningfully enforced. I will wait for the time when virtually every Pakistani who commits such an offense is incarcerated for a real life sentence to make my judgment.
Somehow elwood, I doubt that you will make much effort to be informed on the subject. But I'm glad to know you support enforcement of the Affordable Care Act. I'm seeing the benefits already, as are 6-7 million other Americans. It is going to save taxpayers' money in the long run too. Won't you be proud?
