So John Kerry is going to go to Kiev, pose in front of the cameras, and issue yet one more warning to Vladimir Putin. And what else?
"Kerry announced Sunday that he's traveling to Kiev on Tuesday for diplomatic talks. The United States’ top diplomat added that Western powers are fully prepared to isolate Russia for its military incursion into Ukraine. Among the potential responses he outlined were bans on visas, freezing assets, penalties on trade and investment, and a boycott of the Russian-hosted, G-8 economic summit in June.
He even hinted at the removal of Russia from the list of powerful G-8 countries -- the U.S., Britain, Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan and Russia.
Putin is "not going to have a Sochi G-8,” Kerry told NBC’s “Meet the Press.” “He may not even remain in the G-8 if this continues. … He’s going to lose on the international stage.”
Is he going to re-push that restart button?
Is he going to travel to the far reaches of western Ukraine and peer through binoculars at the Russian tanks coming closer and closer?
Will he be joined by EU's Lady Baroness Catherine Ashton for back-up?
Will he call back to President Obama for further instructions? Not likely. Obama has a habit of becoming incommunicado at moments like these.
Speaking of Obama, you remember this classic moment in diplomatic history, don't you?
Flexibility, indeed.
And how timely. It was just last week that Sgt. Hagel announced we are cutting our own military forces lower than pre-1940 levels.
"Streamlined" I believe was the word he used.
More likely, John-John will attend a couple of dinners, stand and make a speech, propose a toast to peace, and down a tumbler of vodka as is customary, then another tumbler as the next guy make his speech until everybody around the table has made a speech and proposed a toast. I know. I've been there and done that. It makes everybody feel good but tends not to result in anything constructive being accomplished. (Take lots of Alka Seltzer along, John.)
Meanwhile, the Russian forces have given the Ukrainian military until 3 am to surrender or face a storm.
