Here's a piece of good news. An appeals court has upheld the convictions of ten students who disrupted the speech of the Israeli ambassador to the US at UC Irvine in 2010.
Even though they received no jail time and have gone on to resume their lives and careers basking in the accolades of their supporters, the ruling is important. These students will continue to bear the convictions on their records. What they did was wrong and an affront to the principle of free speech in this country, something they have yet to learn. They have shown no remorse for what they did and certainly none for bringing shame to their university. UC Irvine still bears the scars of that incident in terms of damage to its national and international reputation. What makes it worse is that 99% of the UCI students take no part in this ugliness that has brought to UCI name down-especially to large numbers in the Jewish community.
Of course, this latest court decision will enable these characters to wear the victim mantle as they have in the past. Let them. The reality is they are not victims.
