Dartmouth's Proposed New Sexual Assault Policy

"Students found guilty of sexual assault involving penetration, oral-genital contact or oral-anal contact after use of force, threat or purposeful incapacitation of a survivor, as well as students motivated by bias or with prior records of sexual assault who commit these acts, would be expelled from the College if a proposed disciplinary policy is enacted."
-The Dartmouth

Dartmouth College is already a national laughing stock over its being blackmailed by radical students with a list of demands in regards to diversity. As if that wasn't bad enough, it seem they are having problems with sexual assaults on campus. To counter it, the university administration is proposing-proposing-mind you a new disciplinary policy, which you can read above. The Dartmouth, (campus paper) has the story.

You mean to tell me that under current policy, students cannot be expelled after being found guilty of the above acts?

What the Hell kind of institution are you running up there in the frozen tundra of New Hampshire, President Phil Hanlon?

Proposed?

Apparently, under the current policies, everybody but Jack the Ripper would be immune from expulsion.

I wonder if there is any correlation study to determine if the " Asian, Black, Latin@, Native, Undocumented, Queer, and Differently-Abled students" has increased the number of sexual assaults.
If there was no severe penalty for sexual assails before this, that would be another factor.

The university system as a whole is circling the drain.

Miggie,

Interestingly, there is another article in the campus paper about concern of faculty about suggested changes.

GAry,
I read the article you just posted and frankly, it was nothing but gobbledegook. No concrete proposals were made, only we have to "do more" and "coordinate better" etc. What rape has to do with "...homophobia, racism, classism, you name it," as one of the professors opined, is beyond me.

As far as I am concerned, rape is just below murder as the worst thing a person can do. I suppose it is the force and imposition that is used on the disadvantaged or weaker is what offends me so much. It probably what makes me so offended by the government force uses to make people buy health insurance they don't want.

I don't know why Dartmouth should have an inordinate amount of sexual assaults over any other college in the country. I suspect it probably has to how they define a rape or sexual assault.

College students flirt with each other all the time... is that a "sexual assault" now? In fact, it used to be the place where people first met and eventually got married. Actually, it is the best place and time in life to find a mate.

On the other hand, if someone regrets what they did willingly the night before is now defined as rape, it demeans the word. It also creates a "crises" or phony hysterical reaction to ordinary human interactions for kids that age.

Miggie,

If binge drinking is the problem on college campuses that it has been reported to be then i suspect this has a ton to do with the stats. It is not that serial rapists are prowling about in the dark so much as it is that parties and "hook-ups" involving drink and drugs get out of hand. Intoxication, consciousness or lack there of come into play and the question of consent. I don't mean to trivialize rape or blame the victim, but if sexual assault is a problem on college campuses then the above factors must also be involved as opposed to a girl simply being attacked by some guy who breaks down the door of her dorm or jumps out of the bushes.

Maybe that's why Dartmouth is having mo many problems defining the problem.

I understand that out of control drinking etc are major contributing factors to real rapes, just as much as drugging someone would be. Personally, I can't see why any girl would participate in it.

What I am having trouble understanding is why is it that Dartmouth has more of a problem than any other school. Is it more that they are trying to take the lead in addressing the problem that is in all schools?

I don't have the answer to that. Dartmouth is having a lot of problems in other areas. The president seems not to have a clue.
