Who Are the Assembly of Muslim Jurists of America?

Hat tip Ryan Mauro of the Clarion Project

The short answer to the above question is that the Assembly of Muslim Jurists of America is a group of Islamic scholars who interpret Islamic law and issue fatwas on a wide variety of issues. In the below piece, Ryan Mauro of the Clarion Project writes about this group, which is based in California. He also documents some controversial positions they have taken on topics such as female circumcision, spousal abuse and spousal rape.

The opinions of the group go farther. Below, Andrew Bostom in the Counter Jihad Report has more to say about their opinions as to apostasy, blasphemy, and the question of Muslims obtaining citizenship in a non-Muslim land.

To be accurate, both of the above sites are counter jihad sites. On the other hand, Al Arabiya is a major Arab news outlet. Here Al Arabiya quotes the position of AMJA on the question of providing aid to American troops.

Given their interpretation of Muslims obtaining US citizenship, one wonder whether their secretary general, Salah al Sawy and the other listed jurists of AMJA are American citizens.

Sounds like the US Conference of Catholic Bishops, except this Muslim body has no authority except what they can claim and other Muslims will grant them. There is no central authority in Islam, except in the Islamic Republic of Iran, where it was put together as an integral part of the state.
