Not Your Godfather's Sicily

Hat tip Gallia Watch and Revolte en Europe

The French blog Revoltes en Europe has posted this report on a disturbance in Sicily on December 19. The text is in French, but reports that large numbers of Africans who had entered the country illegally and were housed at a retention camp, left the camp and held a protest march demanding asylum and that they be allowed to go wherever they want in Europe. At a certain point, cordons of police blocked the road and some scuffles broke out when marchers tried to break through the police lines. Many of the protesters managed to elude police and march through a nearby town (Mineo di Palagonia) . City officials allowed them to make statements. The speakers stated that they didn't want to cause problems, just find a better life. It appears at least many of the protesters are from Eritrea.

Along with pictures, you can view a 14-minute video tape of the events.

Some of the words spoken are in English. Most of the statements made by protesters and witnesses are in Italian (officials), broken Italian (protesters), or Sicilian (townspeople). Sub-titles are in Italian.

That's probably a sincere statement.
